I formatted the C drive in an old 386, thinking I could install Windows 95.
I reinstalled Win 3.1, but when I turn on the computer I get this message "Invalid System disk replace the disk". What does this mean? I can't get it to go any further than the message.

1. Windows95 will not run on a 386 computer. 2. formatting does erase EVERYTHING on your drive including DOS. 3. Your Win3 install may be there, but it won't work properly because DOS wasn't installed on the drive first. DOS has to be on your drive before Win3 can be successfully installed. 4. You need to install DOS 6.22 or earlier version of DOS then re-install Win3 again.

Yes, Windows 95 runs on a 386. I have got it running on a 386SX with 4 MB of RAM and a 40 MB harddrive. It wasn't very exciting, though.
What I don't understand is why you try to install Windows 3.1 when you want to install Windows 95.

The Minimum Requirement for Windows 95 is: 386DX with 4MB RAM (486DX/8MB recommended) 35-40MB available Hard Disk space (80MB recommended) 3.5" HD floppy drive VGA or higher graphics card (SVGA recommendeded) Microsoft Mouse or comparaible poiting device Audio card/speakers for sound (Optional) 14400bps Modem (Optional)
Note this is the minimum requirement as stated by microsoft. Win95 will not run at any great speed on such a system!

I really appreciate all the help. JR, I installed WIN 95, but when I would turn the computer on, it would show the WIN95 trademark and then shut down.
I had visited a computer person about this, he also said you could run WIN95, but that it would be soooo sllloooowwww, that I would be better off putting Win 3.1 back on, so I did, but now I need DOS 6.22
Again, thank you everyone for your input. I think I may be able to fix the problem now. (hopefully)
