Floppy disk fail (40)

Comment:
good afternoon,
I am having a problem with an A: drive.
At system startup, after memory check, I keep receiving the following error "Floppy Disk Fail (40)".
I disconnected/reconnected the floppy... I change the floppy cable with a new one... I changed the A: drive with one that I know works... and I am still receiving the error message which also prevents me from booting
This problem is in a 486 running WIN95.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for your time.

Try removing the A: from the bios boot sequence. This sound get your OS runing and go from there.

Since you tried a known, working drive to replace the one you had and you still get the error there is a possibility your Controller is toast. Does the drive plug into it's own special card? or directly into the motherboard? Try what ASHLEY4 suggested to see if you can get the machine to boot at all.
Ron.

I think the most probable cause is that your power supply is going bad. To eliminate a controller failure, see whether you can boot to C: when it is put first in the boot suquence in the BIOS.

Funny, I am running into this problem this evening as well. However, in my case, it has to do with the presence of my SCSI card. My system boots fine with floppy detect enabled without the SCSI card. Then I insert the SCSI card and I get the Floppy disk fail(40) error. Turning off the floppy detect BIOS setting allows the system to boot, but then I can't use the floppy drive which I need to get the SCSI driver! Based on my experience, Christine, I don't think the problem is necessarily a controller failure. Do you have a SCSI card? In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions for me, I'm all ears.
I was having the same problem but me it was with my Ls-120. In the BIOS it was set as a 3.5 floppy disk. So i set it on NONE and it fixed my proplem...
