I am having problems booting up XP since the HD (30G) is full (Only 3 megs shown available).
I've booted up with a 3.5 boot disk, and deleted files off the HD to free up some space. However, even after having deleted over 100MB of files, DOS Dir command shows that still, only 3MB of free space is available. So, I've deleted files, but am not seeing the benefit...
Question> How do I get the OS to realize that files have been deleted, from whithin DOS (Since XP crashes everytime I reboot...due to lack of HD space). What utility/command to I need to run too correct this? (FYI - The chdsk at startup of XP is not correcting the problem)

Firstly this is a DOS forum, and f*** all DOS in XP.
XP has features such as DISk Clean-up, IE6 has remove Cookies etc, therefore why are you not using the tools available, go into START menu and use the HELP to find the info you need.
Maybe try the XP forum....

"XP has features such as DISk Clean-up, IE6 has remove Cookies etc, therefore why are you not using the tools available, go into START menu and use the HELP to find the info you need."
He/she can't ~get~ to XP; "(Since XP crashes everytime I reboot...due to lack of HD space)."

The problem is that I can't get to XP, therefore booting up using DOS, and therefore posting in the DOS forum. If I were able to get into XP, I would NOT be having this problem, and would not be troubling you.
I haven't used DOS in some time, and therefore am looking for help with basic (I imagine) file management problem.
Can you direct me to a utility/command that could help me solve this problem...
Thanks in advance.

Use your XP CD or the boot diskette set http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310994 to repair/upgrade XP, have sent a list of DOS compatible commands, also typing HELP at command prompt lists options
MSDOS to delete a folder and contents is:
DELTREE

a) when an hdd is larger than 2 or 3 gig, you must use FAT32 or better still NTSF for the pc to see the larger capacity.
b) then ,sometimes the hdd is too large for the bios to recognise all its capacity (generally 8 gig approx). In this case go to the hdd makers website and download their drive manager program, which overcomes this bios limitation.
Good luck - keep us posted.

Forgot to ask what version of DOS are you using? how is your hard drive partitioned? is it FAT16 (yes can install XP on FAT16) FAT32 or NTFS.

Try what suggested with the XP CD
Or download a W98OEM boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and use the commands listed in this DOS tutorial http://www.butterwick0.freeserve.co.uk/tutor/part_2.html

Have you looked in the bios to see how much capacity it thinks the disc has?
Please advise.
Have you checked how much work area has been allocated for Internet Explorer's usage.
Anyone care to venture a suggestion asto a sensible amount, as often users allocate over the top amounts.
Good luck - keep us posted.
