Linux? No, but for DOS based OS you can use the free FileMaven to transfer across a Null-Modem Cable

With any DOS, Laplink 5.

With DOS 6.22 or above, intersvr/interlnk.

FAT32 can give interlnk hiccups, depending on what's what, and doesn't work with CD drives (iirc).

Actually, there are several programs you can use.

You should be able to find laplink 3 or 4 (ll3.exe) for download, it was (I haven't checked) at "Mick's Powerloads."

Another REAL handy little one is the xtlink.com that came with later versions of XtreeGold, and I didn't even know about it until I "got into" Whinedoz9x.

You can load xtlink.com in the "DOS" mode startup on a W9xx machine, and then load wedoz on top of it, and it'll map the drives right in wendoz exploder.

You CAN use these programs with a CDROM, you just need to load the dos mode CDROM drivers to do so.

I HATE interlink/interserver, would much rather use laplink or xtlink. I've not used File Maven much, so don't know much about it.

X tra P utrid has pretty much put an end to this deal.

Way back when, this was a "ZIP file" [?] util.

Nothing to do with PKZIP or archiving.

If I remember right, just a command line interface; no list boxes like laplink.

Mechanix2Go--were you referrring to my post?

I don't know what you mean by a "zip file utility."

XtGold was a file manager, and it DID have many features, including zip/unzip, but the thing is, XtGold had a nice "graphic" much similar to laplink3 or 4.

The thing about XTLink (and the pain((&^_^%*&(&interlink) is that you could load them at command line, use them that way, but you could ALSO load your file manager on top--then XtGold essentially was not only a file manager, but a "laplink" clone, too.

My point was, you can ALSO do this (carefully) with Whendoz 9xx--you can boot to "DOS MODE" load xtlink, load windows 9x--and there was your second computer--the drives mapped right there in Explorer.

Interlnk works great, but it does have its limitations. It basically emulates a network, and is what I use on older DOS/Win3x machines. Filemaven works similarly to Laplink et al and is simple to setup and run under DOS. The related Link Maven works great under Win9x.

What I mainly use now is Total Commander and its DOS module, LPTDOS

The ZIp utility I used goes back to the late 80s.

I found zip221.zip today. Not obvious if this is a later version of what I used.

The diz says:

::===
ZIP 2.21 is a tiny DOS file transfer utility
that exchanges files at high speed between
desktop, notebook, or handheld computers over
a serial or parallel cable. Compatible with
Win95/98 too. No memory-resident drivers.
User configurable. Menu driven, or command
line operation (good in batch files). Can
compare directories, back up changed files or
entire directory trees. Requires IBM PC
compatibles and appropriate cable. Freeware.

Well, I'm still confused. I don't know how we got off onto this "zip" utility business.
