I am trying to transfer some files on a desktop PC (pentium, Win 95), to a lap top (IBM think pad, pentium, Win 95).
I am using Hyperterminal, com1 on the lap top, and com2 on the Desktop (for some reason when I start up Hyperterminal on the desktop - it won't let me use com1). I follow the instructions for transfering files - but they don't transfer. Do I have to swap the receive and send pins on the cable at one end??

you can, as krystyna suggested, use Direct Cable Connection. or as an alt' to DCC try fastlynx (fx.exe). download from my site at www.dphillip.20m.com

Yes, the send-receive has to be reversed. Before you do surgery on your cable just check it first to see what you have. Try Radio Shack null modem cable cat# 2608033

Also you may want to try a parallel transfer cable as you will get higher transfer times....
To read about file transfers via various cables go here:

HTH,

And once again, WHY oh WHY are you asking this question in the MSDOS forum?
Use the crappy, pain in the neck Direc Connection. If it is not in your Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications, then open control panel and click the "Add/remove software" icon, and click the "windows setup tab." When Widoz stops fiddlin' around, make sure "communications" box is checked, and double click that line. It will bring up another box, click the box for "Direct Connection"
Then, get on "www.wown" and READ READ READ. His website tells you ALL you need to know to do this.
By the way, there is no way to transfer long filenames in Dos mode, without specialized software, anyhow.

one other option that I do is to connect two modems together directly with a phone cord between the to modems. Then I go to one of the computers and type in the terminal program atx0 that will on most modems disable dialtone detection since you are going to be using these two on the phone line. then you type atdt 6 or any number as it doesn't matter. that will cause the modem to go off hook and dial the single number and then wait for the other end to answer. Then you go to the other computer and type in ata in the terminal program. That modem will go off hook in answer mode and the two modems will negotiate a connection and connect. Once you have a connection you can transfer your files although this method will not be as fast as a DCC or a null modem cable but it does work. I do this all the time with a 286 and my pentium running Windows 95. Keep in mind not all modems support atx0 as its dialtone disabler command but most modems do support it.

Sorry I made a typo in my posting. The sentence that says you are going to be using these modems on the phone line should be changed to say not be used on the phone line. Sorry for any confusion that may have caused.

Which site can I refer to for Hyperterminal commands reference on IBM PC to PC serial port testing?
