Have a peer to peer network with two toshiba laptops - an ethernet card in each and crossover cable. Have tried lanmanager, dos client. No problem file sharing between computers when one in dos and the other win95. But when each set up as workstation in dos they do not recognize each other. Have made sure each has same workgroup, etc. Seems that one has to be set as a server but have not been able to figure that out. Is what I am trying to do possible in dos and if so any help appreciated. I know I can use laplink but would like to make a network work. Have been using netbeui protocol. Any suggestions appreciated.

Use Network Client 3.0 (free but still licensed) with only the TCP/IP protocol and static IP addressing, look at the following everything you desire, but eats the 640K base memory:

http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/dosservr.htm

You need to set up both Client and Server, if Win9x does not see the DOS Server then you need to map the drives in the W9x MSDOS prompt box.

You could also look at Invisible LAN which is DOS/W9x compatible and better memory mangement(free for personal use):

Lastly for pure DOS and may work within W9x MSDOS prompt box is NeOS (abandonware trial limited to five PC's):

and NSLAN (abandonware)

Two commercial products are Novel Netware and Lantastic (http://www.spartacom.com/products/lantastic.htm)

Thank you for responding. I guess I am having trouble setting up client and server. I will be using dos 6.2 on one machine and w95 dos on the other. I have downloaded the files you suggested and will try. I found that wown.com gave info for dos to win95,98 and that worked great but not for regular dos to w95dos.

I have striped out DOS from W9x to leave version 7.1x DOS and have had no problem using NWC 3.0, though admit never went back into W9x to see if it would mess up Windows networking! as it would probably do unless removed networking and disabled the NIC in device manager.

see bottom of page at:

also MSDOS 7.xx install:

I am talking about W95B/C the version with FAT32 support, though disabling the NIC should work with 95A the FAT16 only version.

I will try nwc 3.0 with tcp protocol -i am using 95b with fat32. I have networked the two machine using tcp and netbeui in w95 - is it pretty much the same using the dos tcp protocol (as in peer to peer networking specifying ip and dns. Do I have to download anything extra. I have dsk3-1 and 2 and wg1049.
Thanks for helping me.

The three files are all you need except the NDIS2 driver for the NIC if NWC3 can not auto install the NIC.

I tried using just tcp protocol but had the same problem. Will work when going from dos to w95 but not dos to dos. No file sharing.
I use static ip 192 168 001 001 on one machine and 192 168 001 002 on the other. Both had subnet mask 255 255 255 0. I must be missing something or some step. I use boot disk with w95 machine that has dos 7 and boot disk with other that has dos 6.2. I start the w95 first - card is recognized and all protocols loaded and completed. Then start the dos machine, card is recognized, protocols loaded and completed. Then on second machine type net command, browse, but w95 machine not seen. Any suggestions appreciated. The wown.com site is down right now so haven't been able to check their instructions. Thanks

Am getting very very close-hurray. Ran net start server on both machines (is there a file share.exe - for w95 machines?) Even without share file on w95, chose to continue and command successful. Then ran net share on both machines to share c:\ - worked. On w95 machine can see c:\ in dos file manager -so works. On dos 6.2 machine running net shows that d:\ is available but when I use dos file manager I can go to D:\ but there are no files. Seems so close or maybe can not read directories on both machines? Workgroups the same. Any ideas?

There is a file in NWC3 called system.ini which has to have sharing set to YES!

Good luck.....

I am nothing if not persistent - really appreciate you hanging in there with me. Yes, I have file sharing =yes on both machines so that is not it. Another little bit of success - I tried connecting dos machine to w95 (not dos) and now I have the advantage of seeing files for both machines in each machine. I don't think that was very clear. What is different is that now I can see the directories in the dos machine with network neighborhood and see the w95 directories in the dos machine. Now for the strange part - going back to the problem of dos and w95dos. I shared the a: drive in w95 dos and no problem seeing all the files on the dos machine. But - when I share the C: drive - it shows as being successful but no files are displayed. It's almost as if they have all been marked as hidden files. Haven't seen anything about this but do I need to do anything with host, lmhost and network files in client. I am amazed that my trial and error I have gotten this far.

On the dos 6.22 machine changed from basic redir to full and was finally able to read C: directory on w95 dos machine. But there are a number of garbled file letters and just garbage symbols. Not just long file names. Anybody have any ideas what this could be?
