I need to make a batch file that will compare any 2 files and output the differences onto the screen, and as an option to be able to add a third argument. If the third argument is present then save the output of the command into this file.

Well you might try fc.exe in the C:\windows\command directory.
At the dos prompt type fc /? to get all the options.
