Did you run and use fdisk then? You probably removed your partition from your hard drive or created a new one that has not yet been formatted. What were you trying to achieve with fdisk in the first place?

Ok, so you purposely deleted the first partition. I hope you had nothing on it you wanted. If you did, you will have to recover it. If not, get a 98 boot disk from here, install it to a floppy disk and boot with it. Go into fdisk and say yes to allow large disk support. Then choose option [1] then option [1] again and say yes to create full size and active. Exit from fdisk and reboot with the boot disk again. This time at the a:\ prompt type 'format c: /u' [Enter] and let it do its work. Note that you have to have the correct version of 95 to support FAT32. This would be 95B or OSR2 as it's called. After the format boot once more from the boot disk, let it detect your CD-ROM drive and then see what drive letter it gets. At the a: prompt type 'driveletter:\setup' [Enter] and see how that goes. If you have a version of 95 that supports FAT32 it'll install properly. If not, we'll format as FAT16. Either way follow my instructions and post here again when you run into a problem with them.

No, not like that. Boot with the boot disk and then from the a:\ prompt type 'fdisk' [Enter] and follow the instructions above. You don't need to copy it to the hard drive to use it. However invalid media type sounds like you already have a partition established, so go into fdisk and choose option [4] and see what it says you have for partitions (mainly their usage %).

No, no. I said to start where it says 'format' in the above instructions. That's past trying to create a partition. Here:

Exit from fdisk and reboot with the boot disk again. This time at the a:\ prompt type 'format c: /u' [Enter] and let it do its work. Note that you have to have the correct version of 95 to support FAT32. This would be 95B or OSR2 as it's called. Nope. Format is what converts it from unknown to FAT16 or FAT32 or whatever. So you have to do format like I said. Trust me, I've done this before. Hence my ability to tell you what to do all from memory.

Ok then. I dunno what the layout of your CD-ROM for ME is (as mine is a special version anyway,) but try this. Go to the d: drive as you did before. Then type 'dir setup.exe /s' [Enter] and tell me what it says. If you need to go to work, go ahead. Just e-mail me when you're back and ready for more as I am done answering these posts for right now. Time for lunch! :)

Ok then, the format was a success. Now you need to boot with the boot disk one more time and let it detect the CD-ROM. It should tell you a drive letter it assigns it to which will not be C: (hard drive) or D: (RAM disk) - most probably E:. One of the very last lines when the boot disk loads with CD-ROM support will be what drive letter the CD-ROM got...if any. Tell me what you see for the last few lines after the boot disk finishes loading. Or you might just try typing 'e:\setup' [Enter] and see if that works - once again after the boot disk finishes. Now, back to The Sims! I found the money byte and I'm a multi-millionaire!!

Yeah, the "'mscd001' no valid cd rom device..." message means it didn't see your CD-ROM. You said this is a PCMCIA CD-ROM didn't you? Try maybe putting the 95 CD-ROM in the drive and removing the boot disk and booting the machine. A lot of PCMCIA CD-ROMs on laptops (so far as I know - laptops aren't really my thing) support booting from the CD. I am surprised the 98 boot disk didn't find it. You might also try getting an ME boot disk as it is newer and may have more support - including support for your drive. Unfortunately I have to go home and get some sleep for tomorrow (it's 8:44PM here), but if someone else can help you that's great - if not, I'll be back tomorrow...

Ok I give up on trying to get an image file. I put the files you need up on my company's web site. You can find them here. Download the three files and add them to your 98 boot disk. It'll prompt if you want to overwrite with autoexec.bat and config.sys, say yes. Then reboot your machine with that and tell me how it goes.

Blobby66: Thanks. :) theresa: For speaking little English, you're doing great. So don't feel bad. :) Now, the thing I should have done a long time ago (assuming Blobby66 hasn't already fixed your problem. If so - that's excellent, good job Blobby66! :) You say you have a CD-ROM install disk. Had I listened well, this probably would have been solved by now. I need you to boot with your boot disk - the one with my drivers that don't work. Then remove that disk and put the CD-ROM install disk in. From the a: prompt type 'dir *.sys /s' [Enter]. Tell me what it says. The plan is to take the valid driver (the *.sys file) from that CD-ROM install disk and put it on the boot floppy. We could put the drivers directly on the hard drive, but that would only be worthwhile if we make the drive bootable. If we do that, 98 Setup will probably detect that as an old DOS version and make you go through a boot menu to access Windows. I am trying to avoid that. (Even though the menu can be easily removed.)

Ok, here's my assumptions from the filenames. The first one is an NT driver. So it doesn't matter. Then we have an unknown file, a file called statpcdm.sys which I believe is for the CD-ROM drive, and a file called statpflp.sys which I believe is for the floppy drive. So here's what you need to try. Do the following steps:

Put the boot disk back in.
From the a:\ prompt type 'del arccd.sys' [Enter].
Type 'c:' [Enter].
Type 'del *.*' [Enter] and when prompted hit 'y'.
Type 'dir /ah' [Enter] and see if it lists anything.
Type 'dir /ad' [Enter] and see if it lists anything.
(If either list anything, come back and tell me and we'll remove them.)
Place the CD-ROM install disk in the drive.
Type 'a:' [Enter].
Type 'cd pcimide' [Enter].
Type 'copy statpcdm.sys c:\' [Enter].
Place the boot disk back in the drive.
Type 'c:' [Enter].
Type 'ren statpcdm.sys arccd.sys' [Enter].
Type 'copy arccd.sys a:\' [Enter].
Reboot with the boot disk again and see if it works.

As usual, tell me if you run into any problems.
