Tried installing Win3.1 on a 286 c DOS6.22 and was hit with "No extended mem/XMS driver found/installed" (something like that).

Had 1 or 2 expansion cards in it years ago and I'm told they were never removed. Is there a way to tell/test if they're still installed (aside from looking in the box)?

This might be way off (been reading a lot lately and my mind is pretty much jellow right now), but maybe a line in config.sys would do the trick?

I've seen many posts instructing device=blah be edited in. They're all a little bit different, but seemed like a good starting place to ask about.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

I think you should add the following line to config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS

And, of course, make sure that C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS exists.

Extended memory is memory over 1 MB, a 286 only has 640 KB of memory. Remove the Himem.sys line and don't use any other extended memory managers.

If you have no extended memory you have to run windows in standard mode by typing
WIN /S.

Hold on hold on hold on.......286s can have memory above 1 meg, but must be in protected mode to address it. The memory can be accessed through hardware interrupt 15h, but there is no hardware gate A20.
Windows will only run in Standard mode on 286...

Chris,
Could you send me a listing of your Config and Autoexec setup for using the 15h interrupt on a 286. Trying to get Dos 6.22 pass that Himem.sys msg XMS Driver not installed.

Ummm can you run windows 3.1 without extended memory? Acording to my Documentation win 3.1 cannot run without E.M.
