Does anyone know the command for expanding files from a floppy in MS-DOS?
I have used: A:/expand
Prompted for file to expand: A:/DISK_1
Then Location: ?????
tried C:/ but says "Error Can't Open INPUT file a:/disk_1 "

Reason: Ive got Win '95 on (21) floppys and need to run it from MS-dos. Disk_1 is the 1st set up disk which consists of one compressed file: DISK_1 (DIR)

PLEASE HELP!!! THANX

Say the file is called Mode.Co_

The command would be

EXPAND A:\MODE.CO_ C:\DOS\MODE.COM

(Note that there is a space between CO_ & C:\

You can extract files to any location by the way!

However I do not like the look of your file name. Windows 95 comes with a file called SETUP on Disk 1 and does not have just one file called Disk_1 This sounds like an arcive file to me, but which one I do not know!

Thanx Tech Dude,
Im not that up on computers, Disk 1 of the 21 floppys for win95 has got 1 file on it called DISK_1 but once opened the SETUP file is there, along with other files.
But the pc im trying to install it on, wont let me run SETUP until i use the expand command, least i persume!! it reverts back to setting up MS_DOS when i type setup, which is what ive already done.

I downloaded the 21 files from finguz fury's site which i came across on here.
Lets hope it works!! I'll try again 2mora!
if not expect more moans!

What you need to do is extract the files from Disk_1 and so on, onto the floppy disks not the arcive file itself!

I did that, well i used this pc to open the DISK_1 folder on the floppy and saved the 2 files that were in it and then saved them back to the floppy.
It worked fine til i got to DISK_3 then i had to abort the set-up as it didnt recognise that it was disk_3 and said that it could not find the SETUP.CAB on the disk.

Once again i opened the disk on here and found 2 files: PRECOPY3.CAB and WIN95_03.CAB
SETUP.CAB was not listed in either folder.

What do i do now??? plz help!!

Well I download Disk_1 from finguz fury's site same as you have.

1. The files are held in a ZIP file. However finguz has incorrectly stored them in a DISK_1 directory (folder) You need to copy them to floppy disks in the ROOT DIRECTORY (i.e. Not in a folder) Run SETUP.exe (There is no setup.cab as you put it. Disk One should contain 17 files (Fingux's has 18 becouse he has made a shortcut to scandisk!)All the other disks have only 1 or 2 CAB files.

This needs to been done with all 21 of the disks.

Hope this help's.

P.S. There is also a Windows 95 Bootdisk with basic DOS files which seems to be missing - They are available in a number of locations.

I have opend the folder on disk_1 and stored the other files onto a disk with the "send to" option on my Win 98 PC
This solved the problem, til as i said earlier: got to disk_3, and had to abort.
All the other files on the other disks are too big to be stored individually once opened.

The CAB files are left as they are. Do not try to extract the files from them, Just copy direct onto floppy disk.

I take it that you now know that files stored directly to a floppy disk are in its root directory (i.e. No Folder)

If all else fails try and download Disk_3 again.

I did all that, now its saying there isnt enough free extended (EMS)memory to run set up. reset it loads of times but still the same.
It did find errors on the HDD but fixed them now have FILE0001(TO 8).CHK on the c:/ drive. (errors where caused by previous attempts of installing Win 3.11 for workgroups which when setup completed, ran and froze at grey screen with no windows.)

Nor will it let me C:>format c:/u To format the drive at the MS-DOS prompt, and start all over.

Back to basic time on this one I think.

Tech Dude has put you right about creating disks.

Now what type of PC are you trying to load Windows 95 onto? And how much memory does it have?

Unless I am wrong (more than once!) that is a 386Mhz PC. The 120MB is more than likley the size of the harddrive.

I do not think this PC will run Windows 95
