Hello!
Im setting up a legacy machine on wich i want to play old dos games. Now, half the experience is to have the sound working in them, so i downloaded sound drivers for dos.

Now, when i try to load the drivers, using apinit.com, they say that the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\default.ecw isn't found. Why would a DOS driver ask for a windows file? Or am i missing something?

If anyone uses ES1371 drivers in dos with successs, can you please help me out. Thanks a lot!

If you are talking about the Ensoniq (Creative) ES1371 PCI Sound Card DOS Driver it is not for "MS-DOS 6 & Compatable". These Drivers are for "DOS Mode".

In W98 one "Restarts in MSDOS Mode" and installs the drivers, the drivers hook to the Windows drivers, basically it is a work around in W98 to run "DOS Games" which require the older sound card standard parameters.

I qutoe from the following http://83.67.55.228/page2.htm

"Sound cards in PCI format and on-board Sound Chips require specific drivers and have only found CMedia CMI8328/329/8330/8338/8738 and SiS 7018 available. VIA support the on-board sound for the VT82C686A/VT82C686B/VT8231 chipsets, though the Sound Blaster setting in BIOS Setup needs to be enabled first."

The CMedia PCI Sound Cards are readily available in the UK:

Darn! What about those SB emulation drivers? Will they work? I hear they are for plain dos and is there to make it possible to use a modern soundblaster card as an old legacy one.

How am i supposed to do this right?

There are two PCI Creative Sound drivers to cover the Sound Blaster and Ensoniq Range of cards and both AFAIK are for DOS MODE only.

Unfortunately unless can find a Creative Driver Disk it is hard to find the Manual!
here is the link for the two drivers available which state DOS but wether they work or not I do not know:

Thank you! This page you sent me and another one about mame for dos, gave me the info i needed, so now i have a wokring soundcard in dos. The only problem is that a few games complains about "not enough EMS", do you know if this is due to the drivers, since i'v been able to play some of the games before loading the drivers.

Thank you soo much for helping me out man!

There is a link above to the Creative PDF Manual, there is a section devoted to DOS Drivers and Memory Management.

The ".ecw" file is called out in the ".ini" for the sound card. Should be in the same directory as the DOS mode drivers.

Have you tried searching your drive(s) for "*.ecw" files? There is usually a 2MB, 4MB, 8MB ".ecw" files, the 2MB one being the default which can be copied, then renamed default.ecw.

Internet search engines are your friends.
