Hi,

I am facing problem with my hardisk, my PC can detect my hardisk during boot up, but when I want to do the FDISK and FORMAT my hardisk (using Windows 98 Startup Disk), it comes out the following messages:

"Error Reading Fixed Disk"

And I cannot get into the FDISK screen to do the Fixed Disk, of course dont mention about the FORMAT again.

I tried using the Partition Magic 7.0, System Commander to solve that problem, but it didnt help.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Please assist!

Another thing I have to mention, my hardisk is 10.2GB Corner Technology, but the motherboard BIOS can only detect 8GB for it, which it used to be detected 10.2GB. I have tested the hardisk in 3 machines, but it also comes out the same result!

Anybody, please assist!

Chris

Hi Chris,
Try to upgrade the BIOS. ALSO the CABLE LENGTH to the hardisk matters. If you are using a long cable .. try to use a short cable or viceversa. IF that doesn't work then there is something wrong with ur Hardisk. Cable length is the best bet.

You've tried the drive on three different computers? In about nine chances out of ten the drive is bad.

DON'T PANIC!!!!! Just yet.
Download the drive manufactures drive utililies diskette and run the the disk diagnostics, mbr fix and zero fill utils.
Then boot with the win98 diskette and try fdisk again.

I've recovered a few hdd in this way and they are still chugigng along.

Good luck

It could be your drive has gone south, but I agree with Hmmm. D-load the manufacturers diagnostic tools and run them. If the manufacturer doesn't provide anything, go to seagate

http://download.seagate.com/seatools/registration.nsf/d_file_return?openform

and d-load: seatoold.exe. Put a good formatted floppy in your a: drive, and then dbl-click on the file. It'll create a bootable floppy with the diagnostic tools on it.

some older machines require that if they can't support over 8gb, there are certian parameters you have to define for your drive or else the bios/os panicks. i read about it in one of the drive sites.

look at your install guide and see if it syas you have to put certian paramters for older systems.
