I get this DOS message at start up:

Floppy disk fails (40)

If I press F1 I can start up. Does this mean that my floppy disk drive has died?

Hi,

I got the same trouble as you (one of the trouble I have with this damn machine). It seems that it is most possible a case of a bad connection (open your computer and try...).

wish you succes,
ciao,
William

I've got the same problem. In "MY COMPUTER" it says that my 3 1/2" floppy drive is a 5 1/4" floppy drive. I reinstalled the drivers for it and it still won't work. If anyone works out how to fix this problem, please email me at: mutant_munky@hotmail.com

This problem has been plagueing me for over a year now! I have 2 systems doing this and they both started after I put in brand spankin' new motherboards (one a Jetway POS and the other a Gigabyte ATX) I know for a fact that the drive is not bad/pluged in wrong/getting power/CMOS setup correct/bad cables. An given that these were new boards I'm thinking I'm missing a BIOS setting that could be incorrect. It sometimes come up wit a floppy disk fail (80) intead of (40) and in windows, any attemt to read a disk kills the disk and says it is 'unformatted'. Any help with this problem would be great considering I need to format and reinstall the OS soon.
