Comment:
I've been trying to run an old Dos game on XP, and done all the other stuff I've read on the internet... but now I'm getting an error saying:
EMM386 not installed - protected mode software already running

You cannot run EMM386 from a WinXP "Command Prompt" (which is not DOS). EMM386 must be run from pure DOS.
In order to enable EMS memory support for some old DOS games, you need to do so in the properties window of "Command Prompt" if available.

Its the DOS program icon itself that has the extended properties window where you can set memory allocation, but this does not always solve the problem. Some old programs will keep looking for EMM386 no matter what!

Use the message find facility (on the left of this screen) and take a look at message 11223 on the DOS forum.
Although this may not help with cure your problem, there is some useful info there ( in case you were unaware).
