People,
How do I change the logo in the msdos.sys file when I run a Ghost batch file?
I'd like to use a picture that I have in place of the Windows 98 logo imbedded in msdos.sys.
Thanks in advance.
Ben

While not a DOS problem in the real sense:
For starters the Windows 9x Default Logos are imbedded in IO.SYS not MSDOS.SYS!
MSDOS.SYS is nothing more than a updated version of Autoexec.Bat (i.e. an editable file)
If the command is set to LOGO=1 Windows will look for a file clled LOGO.SYS in C:\ otherwise it uses the default in IO.SYS
If set to LOGO=0 it will turn Logo off.
Here is an extract from an unknown URL (I forget)
Windows 9x has a startup logo, a logo that asks you to wait while shutting down, and a logo that say its now ok to turn off the power.
These files are all 320 pixels wide by 400 high by 256 colours. They are displayed at 640 x 400 x 256. To create a startup or shutdown logo use MS-Paint to edit a logo at 640 x 400 x 256. Then before saving use Stretch/Skew from the Image menu to reduce the width by 50% (320 pixels).
Logo Name Location
Startup Logo.sys (only if a custom logo exists, such as Plus! installs; Else it is built in to IO.SYS). C:\
Please Wait... Logow.sys C:\windows
Its now safe... Logos.sys C:\windows

MSDOS.SYS is just a simple text file, very similar to CONFIG.SYS, but with a different set of commands.
Windows 9x Startup Logo is located in both LOGO.SYS and IO.SYS. LOGO.SYS is just a renamed version of a .BMP file.
Not really a DOS question though.

Long Live DOS!

Hmm... I'd say its DOS since it happens outside of Windows98 and irrespective of weather or not you actually load windows. One thing you can do Ben, is edit IO.SYS and embed your own logo file in there. Some people will probably not advise it, but the bitmap data is easy to recognize, rip out and replace. Of course edit a COPY of io.sys, not the original file and only replace the original once you're sure your new one is fine (it should be the same size exactly as the original). Make sure you keep a copy of the original. I'll see about doing it and uploading the result with a keen "MS-DOS" logo embedded.

Dear Daniel,
Thanks for the effort. I have Hex Editors
so I'm pretty sure that I can give it a good
attempt, I just need guidance as to WHAT to edit to replace the stock Windows logo in IO.sys. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Ben
