This 486 PC I bid on Ebay & received does not have a place on the computer for the keyboard to go in. How am I going to use it without a keyboard? And how much does it cost to add it? And why would it be taken out anyway? The person who got rid of it did not mention this in his ad.

Which port does your keyboard have?
there are usually 2 difference sizes for pc's, there is a 5 pin (a big plug)
then there is a 6pin, ps/2(a small plug)
if the size on your keyboard, is different then the size on your computer, you can pick up a converter from say radio shack or something, for a few bucks, and attatch it to the plug on your keyboard, then to the plug on the computer.

I have never seen one, but there are infra red keyboards out there that do not hook to the computer. If there is neither type of keyboard socket and the computer is not set up for infra red, someone has played a practical joke on you. No keyboard came with the computer? Can you get in touch with the seller and ask what the situation with the keyboard is?

Whats the make of the computer, or the motherboard type.
are you saying that theres a hold where the keyboard should go, or that there just isnt anywhere it can go?

how many ports do you have on the machine (ie video port, serial ports etc), this might help us..

Also you can buy keyboard that run off the pararell port/serial port, though i dont know how they get past the bios???

Hello,

The PC I bid on did not come with a keyboard/monitor/powercord ect. It just came with the base. I already had a monitor/keyboard etc laying aroung the house.
It says on the computer 486dx computer solutions. On the back of the pc I see a place for the printer, the monitor, a place for a serial mouse & that is it. I have two keyboards at home, a ps/2 keyboard & one of those keyboards with with the big round connector that I use to have hooked up to an old IBM AT computer I use to own. I dont see either connector on the back of the pc for any type of keyboard. I guess I will get in touch with the seller, not that it would help though.

It's a 486. Are you sure the PS/2 connector is not for the keyboard and that there is no mouse port (except possibly a serial port for a serial mouse)?

I'd say what you think is the mouse connector is actually for the keyboard. Let's not forget, a few "weird" machines used other connectors for keyboards--the old kaypro's used a telephone HANDSET cord, or same as. A few use the same or similar connector as the RJ-45 style lan connector. Look the thing over CAREFULLY. Are you sure there are no other connectors anywhere?

yes i remember some keyboards that used the telephone cord (RJ-11) on older computers.
one day, i saw one, until i read what it said on the port, i thought it was an on board modem =)

Also some of the proprietary X86's had keyboard connections in the FRONT of the PC. Check there. It actually makes a whole lot more sense when you think about it. I think all PCs should have mouse, keyboard and sound/game connectors on the front. Yes I know they are attached to the motherboard but they could come up with some other way to do it (don't talk to me about USB).

Another way they could do it Michael is with USB... :P I think they stick them on the back to make all connections in the same place and save clutter on the visible portion of the machine - the front.

I FOUND IT!! It was on the side of the case. Where the floppy drive is on the front I looked on the side & there was a ps/2 port for the keyboard. A weird place for it to go. Never seen a computer made like it.
