Comment:

I am looking for any information anyone might have about the optional
parameters for working with DUSE.exe. I have the user manual pdf
file, and have tried a bunch of experiments but I am not seeming to
make any progress.

I have a 20 gb usb 2.0 hard drive plugged into a usb 1.1 port. I am
booting off of a win 98 boot disk with only a config.sys file (and
standard system files), and the only line in the config.sys file is
'device=duse.exe'. The system boots fine, the drivers loads fine and
recognizes the external hard drive. I can access it and read/write to
it. However, when trying to create an image of the computer's
internal drive to it, or try to restore an image, the whole system
freezes at random intervals, sometimes 1 min, 6 mins, 22 mins, etc.

The system also freezes when using the xcopy command to copy a large
group of files from the internal drive, to the external drive.

If anyone has had similar trouble, or has some expierence with the
option settings for the drivers I would appreciate any help that can
be offered.

DUSE.EXE is best added to your config.sys as:

DEVICE=C:\DUSE\DUSE.EXE

The DUSE Manual lists a number of options such as

SEC[TORSIZE]= which should be entered as SEC=
ignoring the section within the [ ] and with a single space between DUSE.exe and the option i.e.

DEVICE=C:\DUSE\DUSE.exe SEC=1024

Hope this makes it a little clearer.

I have the help file and understand how and where to use the settings. What I am looking for is insight as to exactly what each setting does, and how they should affect system performance, or in my case, stop the system from freezing. Further how do I determine how many sectors I should be using for my hard drive? It was formatted normally, I didn't specify and special sector settings when formatting.

Latest update...

I was able to get Ghost to work through DOS using the following startup files:

CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH, UMB
DEVICE=EMM386.EXE
DEVICE=DUSE.EXE

AUTOEXEC.BAT:

LH SMARTDRV 3072

The smartdrive suggestion worked wonders. I tested it several times with ZERO freeze ups. However, my final remaining hurdle is that the system still freezes while copying in DOS (using xcopy) 98% of the time. It doesn't freeze everytime, so I know that there is a solution. I would even accept a 98% working and 2% freeze solution.

If you have anymore thoughts, PLEASE post them.

Hi all

I'm stuck with the same problem you're facing
( PII under WIN98 )
I have a 2.0 USB 80GB Hard disk...
Can't make it work under DOS
I've tried DUSE ( all combination of switches), but the PC hangs as soon DUSE is invoked;
I've checked all the Legacy USB issues ( disabled'em all ) but same situation.
Any input welcome
Of course I've tried Mirwin settings...failed
So I'm stuck

I tried with LEGACY USB both enabled and disabled. It didn't seem to make a difference for me either way. I always had them enabled, and during testing, I tried disabling them to see if that helped, but it didn't so I re-enabled them and left them that way. There is another driver called the MOTTO HAIRU driver that seems to work for a lot of people. There is some information about it here:

And you should be able to download it from here:
