I want to create an 'old school' MS DOS environment on my old pc to see if I can get some of my oooold games to run. I don't seem to have a DOS setup anywhere anymore, can anyone point me to a download site or tell me where to get it?

I'm currently downloading FreeDOS, but I have no idea if my old games are compatible with it. Once i've installed it I'll post my findings here.

sorry for the monologue. I'm installing Windows 9x now, I found a site that has info about running old games. http://www.oldskool.org/pc/help/oldonnew/

You could also check out this forum, VOGONS (Very Old Games On New Systems). Just discovered it myself, seems not too bad though.
Never tried FreeDOS - my personal favourite is MS-DOS622 - but if you look around on the 'net you might find a site...
Good luck.

Go to bootdisk.com and download dos 6.??
Normally this comes on 3 floppy discs.
The first contains the start of the the installation process.
Good luck - keep us posted.

The main game I was trying to get running was Discworld (1994). Some trouble with my soundblaster prevented it from running. Ironically, it's running now on my main system, in a DOS window under XP....
Thanks for the url Mike, exactly what I needed. I must have missed it during my search.
In a moment I will install DOS 6.22 on my Pentium II 400 mhz with 128 MB ram and see if I can slow it down to run like a 486

Mike, I take that back. The files at bootdisk.com are exactly that, boot disks.
I still need the DOS installation disks which are doing quite a good job hiding from me somewhere on the net.

Do a DIR on the first disc.
Is there a program called SETUP there. If so, when run it installs dos.
** MOST IMPORTANT ** test it elsewhere first, just in case in the process it attempts to format the hdd or similar.
I am not sure what you mean by boot disc(s). By defination the first floppy of the three has to be a boot disc, in order to get the pc going.
Some dos discs then automatically enter the installation process, while others you fire off manually with setup or whatever.
Whenever I install dos (which I have done many times), it is on a hdd that is empty having just been formatted.Bear in mind that some old games will simply not run on modern pc's even under original dos. e.g. I have one that fails due to (would you believe) too much memory.
When this happens, try downloading from the net as later versions sometimes work. e.g. DIGDUG
When speed is an issue, I understand there is a utility that slows down ones pc.
Good luck - keep us posted.

I have DOS installed now. I found the three install disks. The files they offer on bootdisk.com are only for booting though, they don't include the operating system. That's what I mean with bootdisk(s).
So far everything is running fine. I don't have a cdrom in the machine so I might attemt to set it up as dual boot with MS DOS and Windows XP so I can transfer files over the network connection.
