You're booting straight to dos and not opening a dos window, right? When booting to dos on a 9X PC you don't have LFN support. So, does your dos 7.1 even allow long file names? Do a DIR and check. If not I doubt you need a special defrag. But, given that, you might look at NTFS4DOS. It has a defrag utility--DFRGNTFS--that does preserve long file names and I believe it can also be used on FAT drives. And it does run from dos but only after the NTFS4DOS files load. I've never tried to run it in any other context. But you could try it and see what happens. I think there are several files named dfrgntfs.exe. One is an MS file for NTFS drives. Another is from a utility called 'diskeeper'. The one ntfs4dos uses may be one of those or another one entirely. To be sure you can find a download for ntfs4dos, run it and then copy dfrgntfs.exe to your 7.1 machine.

Banfield you are using the Weigner "illegal" CDU-DOS 7.10 I presume ?? Therefore you need to install Windows 98SE and use the MS-DOS SubSytem from that, this would allow you to pop back into Windows to Defrag. Alternatively you could look into the Defrag in FreeDOS, to see if it is LFN compatable !!!

It is called MSDOS 7.10, and come in 2 installable floppies from an ISO image. It is sayed that it is the true DOS running background in w9X. I´d installed it into my 5 80486´s, (one of them is a recently buyed TI TravelMate 4000 486 DX2) and it is running fine and stable, but I wanted to know how to defragment the HD without breaking LFN´s. If this is win98 dos then you probably don't have LFN support anyway. But again, just do a DIR and see if the long file names show or if you get the truncated 8.3 form with the ~1.

Dave: I can see he two formas of dir and file names, with the tilde and complete. But it isn´t the matter. I added the sentence in autoexec.bat setdir /o /p and I can see both forms of directories or file names, ordered in a page per screen and in alfabetic order. But, I want to reorganize the disk, like defrag did with the 6.22 and all other previous versions. No mothe simple that it. Very Thanks. Osvaldo.
