I wondered if you could help.
I am trying to enable a USB Safecom Technologies 5.25 Disk Caddy in DOS (Maxtor 20GB Hard Drive). The hard drive has been formatted with 8GB FAT32 Partition.
I have used USB dos drivers and DUSE in the past to load USB CD/DVD drives in DOS which have worked.
Unfortunately I can not get the Caddy to function in DOS. I have tried all of the mentioned options on http://newdos.yginfo.net/usbdos.htm.

DUSE 4.2 will enable the USB port but will not seem to have a compatible driver. Popup message reads driver not loaded.
DUSE 4.9 Hangs.

I also tried USBASPI.sys. I have a version that does recognise the maxtor drive and does not hang, it see's the drive on ID 0. This is great but I can not find a universal SCSI driver to make it work correctly. I have tried both DI1000DD.sys and ASPIDISK.SYS. Both of these hang when loaded.

I have tried DUSE4.2 using a USB CD drive on the same PC, and this works fine, so I know the PC can utilise USB ports in DOS.

I have also tried the DAT.exe boot disk, with no success.(http://www.datoptic.com/Drivers/DAT.exe)

Have you any Ideas why the USB mass storage device (safecom caddy) will not function with all the universal drivers?

Thanks

Hi,

What version of DOS?

Have you tried:

USBASPI1.SYS /v

?

I am using USBASPI5.SYS /v /w.
This is showing the mactor drive with ID 0.
It is showing all the controllers and seems to be working.
I have tried this with Dos6.22 and win98SE startup disk.
If I habe nothing else in the config.sys or autoexec.bat the PC shows the information on the USB ports then returns to the A prompt.
As soon as I try and load one of the universal drivers after USBASPI5.sys the system hangs when trying to load.

Thanks

I still see that you are evading telling us what version of 'dos'. If you formatted your hard drive in FAT32 (W98 8GB) you won't see it using FAT16 (DOS6.22). There are no universal drivers.

as mentioned in an earlier post. I have used both a dos 6.22 startup disk and win98 startup disk.
If using USBASPI.sys. another driver must be used to assign the port to the hard drive. In most cases one other posts is seems that people have used DI1000dd.sys or ASPIDISK.SYS (these are the universal SCSi drivers)
After writing the first post I thougth that the FAT32 might be a problem so I have reformated the drive to FAT 1.5GB Partition.

Thanks

I use these in w98se DOS:

aoatapi.sys /D:oemcd001
USBASPI1.SYS /v
DI1000DD.SYS

You can leave out the first one if you don't need CD access.

My config.sys syntax is the same as you suggest.
The USBASPI.sys /v driver loads and sets the maxtor drive to ID0.
The di1000dd.sys driver then loads and the system hangs.
The screen Reads:.
Installed ASPI Manager

DI1000 ASPI disk driver ver 2.00
Available ID=0
ID0-HD..Maxtor 6E040L0.

At this point the PC hangs. CTRL ALT DEL does not worl I have to power cycle.

I have tried using ASPIDISK.SYS instead of Di1000dd.sys but the same happens.

Disconnected the USB Drive and the system booted to A prompt and did not hang. This compatability problem with drivers.
Any Idea?

Thanks

Next thing I would try is REM out anything BEFORE those drivers in confog.

A likely culprit is HIMEM, but I'd REM everything [files buffers stacks lastdrv]and once you get past the hang you can put 'em back in / move 'em around.

HTH

Hi,

I'm running out of skill here.

Hase the drive been tested in it's USB box, like in windows or NT/w2k/XP?

Is the drive partitioned and formatted?

How is it jumpered?

The drive works fine in win2000.

I have tried both a maxtor and quantum HD. Both formated to 1.5GB FAT.
The jumpers are set to master (this is the only setting that works).

Here is a link to the website of the product

What type of caddy do you know works with these drivers? I may buy another.
Thanks

Thanks

Hi,

I guess this:

1.5GB FAT

means a DOS 6.22 FAT16 partition.

I looked at the box which my USB ext came in. No brand name. Probably made by Chinese prison labor.

You might try a post in the hardware forum for a redommendation.

Just purchased USB to IDS adapter from www.ebuyer.co.uk.
Like you said just a plastic plug IDE with USB plug other end and a PDU for the dusk drive.
Used config.sys

device=usbaspi5.sys /v /w
device=di1000dd.sys

worked first time.

Using ghost the disk can even be formatted NTFS.

Thanks for you help

Thanks
