Ok, I am trying to get my old computer working so that i can play old dos games. The sound card is a "SoundPlus -- ES488+" or an "ES488", but I don't think this matters as far as drivers go. It has a joystick port, and a microphone jack, so Im pretty sure it is the ES488+. Now, There are windows 3.1 drivers, but no dos drivers anywhere. The Sound Blaster 1.5 driver that came with windows works with windows, but not dos. Is there a patch I can use to make it work? Also, the driver that comes with windows doesn't install into a folder, it goes right into the C:\windows\system folder, so I don't know about a patch either. Please, I need a dos sound driver. Thank you,
Zack

I found that Windows 95 or 98 has the drivers for the ESS ES488 Audio drive in its database for drivers. Your PC being a Pentium ,you could probably use this way to dos games with sound.Install a minimal installation including multimedia of Windows 9X to support dos and your hardware at the same time. Boot with a boot disk from the same Windows 9X OS you have and start your game. You will have to add a set blaster line in autoexec.bat.Check your sound card properties when using Windows to find the IRQ ,DMA ,etc. that can be used. Those are the same under dos and you need to set them in the dos game for the sound to work.Good luck.

All you have to do to get the sound working in dos is to put the SET BLASTER command in your autoexec.bat. I did this 4 months ago with some old sound cards I could not find the dos drivers for & it works great for sound in dos. Make sure it is loaded first in your autoexec.bat. Do a search on google & you will find info on this. I have used this to get all my old soundblaster clones to work in dos that I couldn't find drivers for.

Example

SET BLASTER = A220 I5 D1

Its that simple.

Glad I found your info on using my SB Live! card in DOS.

I'm trying to set it up to run in a pure DOS OS - no Windows involved. I have a seperate HD in a drawer just to run old DOS games on my P4 system and need all the help I can get to do it. Some of the games I'm trying to run are:

Strike Commander
F-15 Stike Eagle III
Yeager's Air Combat.
