Look for win9x (NOT NT or XP!) drivers for the card. Because win 95 and 98 were based on top of dos, any driver package made for win 95 or 98 should include the dos drivers.

No no no, this is NOT correct. For certain sound cards it may be true, but not for others. So you should NOT say the word "any".

Er, sorry. Since my SB PCI 128 came with dos drivers I guess I made a mistake in assuming that all cards would be the same :(

Anyway Sal, I checked on DriverGuide.com and there are several listings for that chipset. I don't know if any of them have the dos drivers, but you might want to take a look.

Hi!
And how do I install the drivers under DOS? Obviously the setup.exe doesn't work since it's a Win application. I'm no expert and just want to run a few old games (Sam & Max anyone?) under DOS 6.22 (booted from floppy). I have the SB PCI 128 CD with the Win 9x drivers.

Thanks!

Sal : Unfortunately, your best bet is to install the original OS (W98se?) back into the HDD, then install the drivers for that OS. From there, it should be easy enough to see if the drivers offer legacy or DOS emulation support inside of the device manager.

Same largely goes for you as well, Philip, all of the older SB cards I've seen so far have legacy support included.

In all, I myself have ran across only 1 chipset that appears to offer anything in remotely DOS or Win3x (close enough) type installation in a PCI based soundcard.

Thanks for the help! I'll see if I can spare a small partition for Win95... ...and hope that the games work either in a DOS prompt window or in DOS mode.

Philip, if you create a temporary partition (or use a seperate HD) and install win95 and the SB drivers onto it, look at the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, and copy any refrences to the sound card (I.E. the set blaster= command) to the over the autoexec.bat and config.sys files on the dos partition.

Also look for a file called "dosstart.bat" (note, I'm not sure if it'll be there for win95 as I've never used it, but it's there in win98)

dosstart.bat is the batch file used when you select "restart in dos mode" from win9x. After installing the SB 128 drivers, this batch file will contain the lines to start up the dos SB16 emulation.

Add these lines to the autoexec.bat on your dos partition as well, then copy the files refrenced by these lines to the dos partition, (keeping the directory structure).

One last thing, when you start up, the emulation driver will say it can't find a file from the windows/system directory (I can't remember then name at the moment and I've changed my setup so I can't check). Find this file in the win95 partition and copy it to an empty windows/system dir on the dos partition and it should work.

Once you've got this working, you should be able to get rid of the win95 partition with no problems.

@Merick: You're the greatest! :)
I haven't tried yet but it sounds too convincing not to work. Anyway, thanks for the help!!

No problem. Just remember, if you can get it to work, this method will only give you sound in DOS. If for some reason you decide to install win3.1 you won't get any sound for the windows programs (or at least, I wasn't able to find any)
