I prefer Norton's Disk Doctor under Windows 3.1x myself. I do not know if you will be able to find it anywhere in the net though.

You can get Norton Utilities 4.5A from www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk towards the bottom of his DOS Resource Page.

It contains many utilities to keep your harddrive in order, including Disk Test (DT.EXE) and Speed Disk (SD.EXE)which are NU's Scandisk & Defrag.

WARNING - Only for FAT16 Drives however!

And best of all its now Freeware!

thanks all! some really great answers to get me started off. if anything else comes to mind please post it up here for me, thanks.

results of various google searches prior to posting here were *worse than useless*, eg:

Your search - "scan disk alternatives" - did not match any documents.
The spelling correction - "scandisk alternatives" - also did not match any documents.
Suggestions:
Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
Try different keywords.
Try more general keywords.

I'm writing a disk scanner, but it'll take quite some time :) -- only finds detailed problems with the bootsector at the moment.

I intend to work on it slowly on purpose to make sure I can catch any possible issue.

386guru, freedos doesn't currently appear to have a scandisk alternative or even checkdisk, could it have been in an earlier release?

W0rm, judging by the other stuff on your website your disk scanner should be well worth the wait.

Wengier,http://www.bear5.com/share/dos/ndd2002.zip appears to be a dead link
