Comment:

I recently aquired an old laptop with win95 on it. In the process of changing the logo on the startup screen I moved a sys file that i dont think i should have. Everytime I try to start the thing now it gives me a
"Invalid System disk error". There is no disk in the floppy drive. I moved the lo.sys file onto the desktop and I need to either move it back into C: or get into windows. I really suck with dos. Any suggestions? I would relay windows but I have no CD drive

This is one of the three special files used to boot the pc:-

i) IO.SYS
ii) MSDOS.SYS
iii) COMMAND.COM

a) all should be in the root directory (C:)

b) i and ii should be hidden.

----

Use the dos DIR command:-
DIR C: /A:S to show the two hidden files.

Use the dos ATTRIB command:-
ATTRIB IO.SYS to show their attributes.
Both should be SHR.

If not, use ATTRIB to correct.
e.g. ATTRIB +H IO.SYS (sets file as hidden)

GOod luck - keep us posted.

Fatcookie, if you have a bootdisk, it would be simpler to just boot with the bootdisk & at the A:\> prompt type:

sys c: (ENTER)

This will transfer the system files (including io.sys) to the HD, making it bootable again.
