I think the best DOS player is MPXPlay. I don't have the web page for it offhand, but I'm sure you can find it.
I've spent the last several months writing software for my car MP3 player to use MPXPlay. It works very nicely, I just have to work out a few bugs. I personally refuse to run Windows and Winamp, since it is so limited to just playlists.
My software allows you to play single songs, and playlists. It allows you to search for any song (from ID3 tag) by Artist, Song Name, and Album. You can then add several songs to a playlist as well as save this to disk for later use. I also have genre filtering included as well. I believe its the best interface for any MP3 player that I've seen. I just finished the IR code, and I'm working out all the bugs. Hopefully I will finish it soon so other people can test it. Right now it outputs to my 2 line LCD, but I would want it to support 4 line, since a lot of people have this. on http://ligamusic.com good player

MPXPLAY refuses to run on my 486 with 4 MB of RAM (as do many nice programs). DOSAMP was the only MP3 player I could get going on it, though it garbles the first half-second of each song for some reason.

MPR is a nice and simplistic MP3 player. It doesn't support playlists, and I can't get it running on FreeDOS.

On a similar note to MPXPLAY, you might like DAMP. It also supports LCD screens and custom buttons, although I think the performance might be a little poor.

I´ve ben using MPXPLAY since version 1.42, and all them to 1.56 works OK in a AM486 DX4 and DOS 7.10. And I play mp3´s from another machine similar to this in a LAN running NeOS.

Surely the 4 mb is few memory, I´m usin´ 16 for this machine.

Very thanks for your program, I´ll try it and so I make you know my oppinions. Thanks in advance for yoy job. I also hate all kinds of window$.

If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong.
