Comment: I have a problem. The CD Rom drive in my laptop has packed in. It is not the CD drive itself but something in the laptop. I have bought an external pcmcia drive but if ever I want to reformat the hard drive and load Win98 again, I need some way of allowing the system to "see" the pcmcia slot on a boot. For this I believe I need a DOS PCMCIA Socket driver. Do you know where I might find this?

Reply: (edit)As far as I know both Windows 95 & 98 have built-in PCMCIA Socket services. The problem is getting the damn thing to work in DOs so as to install Windows! You do not say what make or model of laptop you have, as many manufactures supply PCMCIA Socket Services on Support Sites (But not all!) Come back with details!

Reply: (edit)For any PCMCIA device, such as your CD-ROM to work in DOS, you need to have specific device drivers in the config.sys file. There is a different driver for different PCMCIA devices such as PCMCIA hard drives, PCMCIA CD-ROMS, PCMCIA memory cards, flash cards, you get the picture. Each device requires a different driver in the config.sys file. Usually, when you run a PCMCIA setup program, it will ask you which devices you might possibly use and then it will add the proper driver line in your config.sys file. In order to help you further, please post the brand of computer you use and the model number. Then, someone can locate where the PCMCIA setup software is. That's assuming you don't have some odd brand. The PCMCIA drivers for the Gateway Colorbook laptop computer is at: http://members.xoom.com/Colorbook

Reply: (edit)Preston, You are on the right track, But you need the basic PCMCIA Socket Driver, so that DOS knows where to look, Then the Device Driver for CD-ROM, Memory, Modem, LAN ect! Thats 2 Levels of driver you need, Other than that JoJo & yourself are right, The best place to start is the support page for your Make & Model.

Reply: (edit)I think I might be "homing in" on the answer. The notebook is by Time Computers(a UK company which just asembles the bits and sells them cheap) and is a Cybernote 953E. I believe the motherboard is by Veridata and uses the Intel TX Chipset (if that's any help). I'm sure we'll get there in the end. Thanks for your reply.

Reply: (edit)www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk has a PCMCIA Loader? Even Mick C (His Site) says it has limited uses. Try it, and let us know! Windrivers Tech Tips talk about Card Wizard Pro avalable from - http://www.systemsoft.com/products/pccard/index.htm But I think you may have to pay for this, Unless someone has a copy! Also I think it may be for WinNT

Reply: (edit)I also have a NEC Versa 2000C and NEC is useless when it comes to supporting ANYTHING over 4 years old, so no socket driver on-site. I went to Gateway's site and went to their Laptop drivers and found Cardsoft. Cardsoft works in DOS & Win3.x. It detects you PCMCIA controller (NEC Versa 2000 is a cirrus pcmcia chip). Cardsoft looks like it may work with many other systems. Hope I helped anyone.

Before i try to install Win98 from CD, i have installed the original Vintech-drivers in the config.sys and autoexec.bat under MS-DOS 6.22.
