I want to edit some Windows programs in Dos, but the problem is that I need to use the tilde sign (~). As you can see, in Windows this is not a problem. But in Dos when I try the tilde key, I get something like, but not, an exclamation mark. Can anyone tell me how to arrange my computer so that I can access the tilde in DOS. Thanks

Andy, look at the question I posted last night MSDOS PROB (not the usual), Les has given an answer, not perfect but it will at least allow you to do your changes.

You need to re-map the keyboard layout to use the correct key codes.
Looks like you need to add one line to your config.sys and one line to autoexec.bat
Try putting this line in your config.sys file:
Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys
The "044" number refers to standard international code for the UK. You need to use the code for your own country.
In your autoexec.bat file insert this line.
keyb uk,,c:\windows\command\keyboard.sys
Try that.

Also, these lines may have something to do with it. They are in my own Autoexec.bat
mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi)
mode con codepage select=850
