Your 10 year old PC DOS will not directly access the cable modem. The cable modem needs to be controlled by a computer using Win9x and the software your cable provider gave you.

The key here is the software that you cable company gave you when cable internet was installed. You have to use it. What platform does your cable's software use? Win9x i'll bet.

Sure you can! You'll need the DOS packet driver for your NIC and Arachne. If a for example, if you are using the 3COM 3c900b, the file you are looking for is EL90X.DOS which may be on your 3COM install disks.

You can find 3COM DOS packet drivers at www.3com.com and you can get Arachne at:
http://home.arachne.cz/

From the Arachne web site "for local networks, you can use any device with packet driver available for it (eg. Ethernet card."

I have an old P-120 running DOS only, and I can get on the net through @home. What a hoot! The machine is part of a home Lan and I use WinGate as the proxy on my Win 2000 machine.

I hope this gets you on your way.

device=c:\el90x.dos
rebooted....
and have next error on execution:
"ERROR: Unable to access Protocol Manager.
ERROR: Initialization failure.Driver will
not be installed"

Read the Arachne instructions for installing packet drivers. And here is the whole 3COM DOS install package for your NIC, including Help files:http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c90x/3c90xx2.exe
