Comment:

I have MS-DOS 5 on floppy disks. Every time I try to boot a 486 computer with no operating system with the disks, I get a "INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ENTER" prompt. Can anyone out there help me?

Possibilities:

a) floppy drive knackered or wrongly connected
b) corrupt floppies

Have you tried another Bootable Floppy ??

Is there any BIOS setup on the machine ? If so make sure floppy is first device.

It could be that the first disc in the set is not bootable, instead being just for installation purposes.

The way to check this is to load it in another pc and CHKDSK A: and DIR A:

If COMMAND.COM is present and also there are 3 hidden files it is bootable.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

No. I have no other bootable floppy.

I've already checked the BIOS setup. A: is the first drive in the boot sequence.

I'll have to try loading it on my sister's computer to see if those files are present.

It would be better to use MS DOS version 6.2?, rather than 5.?.

If you really want version 5, check what files are on disk 1 of the version 5 set you have. There may be one called install or similar that fires off the installation.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

I am going to try this new install Sunday. I have a new version of MS-DOS in which I'm pretty sure it's authentic. I'll keep you guys posted.

Oh! I forgot. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Windows 3.1? I want to have it just in case DOS works. If you find a place, it would be of great help.

Windows 3.1 is rather dated.

If possible upgrade your 486 to 16, 20 or 32mb of memory and go for W95.

Depending on the cpu speed, W98 might work.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

I found a Miniature Version of Windows 98 that is compatible with the computer. It only takes about 20-30MB, so I might install it. But one question. How would I transfer a zipped version of the software to the computer if it won't fit on a standard floppy disk. The file is 6.38MB. Help me out please.

You really need a cd drive to install W95 or W98.

As stated earlier you need a fast cpu for W98. I seem to recall a SX/DX66 or more. How fast is yours?

Good luck - Keep us posted.
