Hello everybody,
My friend recently gave me an old Compaq Presario 520cds desktop. The HD has been wiped clean and he doesn't have any of the original drivers. I'm going to install MS-DOS 6.2.
My problem is that I don't have any drivers (mouse, video, soundcard, cd-rom). I tried Compaq's site to no avail. I also don't know what components are in the system.
Basically, I just need to know where I can find some basic drivers for my devices. I really appreciate any help you all can give me.
Thanks in advance!

DOS has a built in video console driver and an ANSI.SYS for controlling your display. For the rest, download a good utility that will run under DOS that lists the hardware on your system. One is HWINFO at hwinfo.com .
Once you know what you have on the system you can start searching the Internet for DOS drivers.

You should be able to get a 'softpaq' from Compaq's website (usually fits on 2 floppies or you can install it on your HD before installing any OS) This will give you all your system info and is useful for future config. changes.

I use a Compaq Laptop myself, and have always found what I need on the Compaq site. Even Compaq PCMCIA Card Services Software!
Here is the page you want at Compaq since you do seem to be having diffucty finding it. Steve It is more helpful to provide a link if you can!

Under MS-DOS you should not need a Video driver, as Bill2 points out. But your Mouse and CD-ROM Drivers are listed here. As is the Windows 3.1 Video Driver should you install it. I surgest you download all the drivers now, and store them for future use.

I too have a CDS 520 that has been wiped clean. But I want to install Win95 but can not find any divers for the CD-ROM that run under MS-DOS. Do know where I could find some? (I have already checked the Compaq/HP site).

I was able to fix my problem with help from www.bootdisk.com. I suggest it to anyone trying to make a boot disk.

I am currently doing a reinstall on one of these. You can call Compaq and order a Quick Restore cd. it only costs $10, this will give you the drivers you need, this is only 3.1 windows, though. then you can upgrade to win 95 from there. Its not going to take newer windows due to the processor.

I have a problem trying to start a few older games that require DOS. It says that I have no EMS driver or not enough EMS memory detected. When I try to start the other game it says that I must install an extended memory manager like EMM386 or QEMM. I have tried looking for these on the web to download them, but have had no success. I conteacted someone that works for the game developers, and he told me to try a program he sent me in the email. When I tried to use this program, it said that no dos based cd-rom drivers were found, and to contact the manufacturer. Same thing with the sound card and mouse. The information Compaq has given me has not helped at all, and I am wondering if anyone knows of anything about solving this. Thanks for any help,
Elijah
