Most MS-DOS images are only available as (winimage) IMZ or ZIP arcives.

WinImage (For Windows 95) which is available at www.winimage.com ... IMZ are compressed winimage files that will only extract with the 32bit version. So if you want MS-DOS you need Windows 95+ First ..... Great Idea! NOT

Whatever happened to powerloads DOS arcive files that were in (I think) Disk Express or DIM format? (i.e. extract from the DOS prompt) Even worse are the ZIP files with NO boot sectors or disk labels. Just what we need, Crap arcives for the future......

Anyone know where you can find the DOS based image making programs???

Who told you these files will only extract with the 32-bit version? Ever heard of Winimage for Win3.1. I use this & it extract ALL .imz files with no problems. I would rather files be in .imz format. And as far as zip files go with msdos, they are EASY to extract to & simple to install. I have dos in zip & imz formats. Try to learn more than one way to do things because there are a bunch of ways. Crap archives for the future? Give me a break. Quit bitching & actually try to learn different ways of doing things. How simple minded can you get Geez.

I happen to agree with Dave upto a point.

WinImage 5.0 the latest version works only with Windows 95 and above. Which has a self-extract accessory as well by the way!

WinImage 3.0 for Windows 95 (Which is a 32bit version by the way) will indeed work with Windows 3.1 But only if you have Win32s installed as well! Older Win31 versions DO NOT support IMZ Images, which was introduced from version 3.0 onwards.

Dave is right about ZIP arcives lacking the 'Boot Sector' and 'Disk Labels' of a DOS Install Disk, And yes Mark you can Install from them, (but it is far from easy for averyone!) if you use a Bootdisk or some other means! I for one feel that most of the people who come here would like a simple to use self-extract arcive, such as powerload used to offer before he was closed down! Thats why he was closed down - He became to popular, as he was the only one to offer this option at the time!

The WinImage IMZ option is for me far more usefull than is a ZIP arcive. As most users who want MS-DOS already have access to a Win9x PC anyway.

If someone would like to use a DOS based arciver try:
http://www.wilmington.net/bmtmicro/catalog/dexpress.html
Which is the Disk eXPess Dave asked about in the first place.

Thanks Roy I could not have put it any better myself.

Why copy bootdisks with a zip utility and make life harder for yourself and others?

Use WinImage at least. As for the create self-extracting arcive,>/i> I do not know if it is available on the shareware version? Better still a DOS arcivers such as Disk Express.

Mark, Not everyone is as experienced as you seem to be. Give Dave a break, He has made a valid and interesting point. Even if it is not to your likeing.

imaging isn't my thing, so I'll ask a question. I thougt the older versions of WinImage, used in Win3.1, made files ending in *.ima and the newer 32bit WinImage software made images ending in *.imz
The old WinImage software can't decode *.imz but the newer WinImages can decode both *.imz and *.ima

If I'm wrong, what is *.ima files?

I agree with Mark. The files you download off the net are not going to be always to your liking. A download I wanted a couple of days ago was in ace format. Try to learn all the ways to extract files and you wont have any problems.

I dont own a copy of Windows 95+ as Dave put it & have downloaded Dos in .zip format & did not have any problems extracting & installing it. Now true, it is a little more difficult, well I wouldn't even say difficult, tedious rather, when installing but hey "WHO CARES" You are getting a free download so be grateful! No problems with .imz file eithers.

IMO, Winimage is bulls---.
What the man needs is:

Disk eXPress Self-Extracting Diskette Image (OS/2 and DOS) V2.34 07/08/94
(c) Copyright 1991-94 Albert J. Shan. All Rights Reserved.
SHAREWARE VERSION

Usage: MSD622D1 [/d] [/s] [/t] [drive:]

/d Display image description
/s Suppress overwrite prompt
/t Test image file integrity only
drive Drive letter of the target diskette drive

Batfiles: The DOS batch file programming handbook

Note: The target diskette must be formatted and must not have any bad sectors.

What happens if someone were to post the images here?:

I've uploaded two tiny DOS programs to my briefcase:

One program makes images from diskettes, the other writes diskettes from images. They use images files that end in the diskette size like *.720

WinImage will read these files and create diskettes using the images from this software.

Thanks Laurence, I agree with you. But you did not post link for Disk eXPess files (I did further up) its:
http://www.wilmington.net/bmtmicro/catalog/dexpress.html
I also agree with Slade. Learn about ALL types of formats. But use the one best for the job. And ZIP is not the one for bootable image files. Not every one can re-create one from a ZIP.

IMZ compressed images were introduced wirh WinImage 3.0 and 2 versions are available 16bit for Windows 3.1 and 32bit for Windows 95 & 3.1 with Win32s installed. IMA is UnCompressed Image Files. From version 4.0 onwards of WinImage it has been for Windows 95/98 only.
