Comment:

I created a new partition, D: using pqmagic 5 in dos. I then formatted D in dos ie format d: this made my c drive the same size as the d drive, and makes the files on it inaccessable. The data is still shown in pqmagic, but anywhere else, the drive is smaller and empty. How can I get back the data?

Sounds familiar !!!
The problem is that M$ can't run properly on it's own filesystems !!

You can try 2 things !!!

1) Turn on LBA in your BIOS for that disk (which works many times for me)

2) Boot from a linux CD, mount you C and /or d partition. Copy the data to a SAFE place and remove ALL partition, start over.
