Hi all,
As this is a DOS forum, would anyone know of any good sites or free programs on using DOS? I am fairly new to computers and know little or nothing about how to use it. Is there different types of DOS programs? What is real mode as opossed to other types? As you can tell, I haven't got a clue but would like to learn some of the basics so I don't mess up my computer.
Thanks in advance for any help, Dave

Hi Dave wolcome to the crazy world of computing.

Yip there are tons of Dos proggies from simple text editors, spreadsheets games utils, games and lots more. Windows 9x & ME have a dos base.

Also there are different Dos's from different companies. DR-DOS is arguably the most feature rich.

It is very stable, generally only one task at a time you see-if you want real multitasking on a x86 machine OS2 is the way to go.

Contry to popular belief there are muti- tasking versions of Dos though.

If you do a search at google.com you'll find lots of usefull info.

Good luck.

You are using Windows? If you can get a user guide for dos the commands are in there. There are books on the commands, and if there is one named DOS for dummies it will probably be a good one. REAL DOS is the dos prompt when you cannot multi task. IF you exit to ms-dos that is real dos, but if you just select the MS-DOS prompt on the menu that is not. (because you can press ctrl and esc to run a second dos prompt.) It is about shared files. There are none in real mode DOS.

Thanks Mark p and fred6008 for the response.
I think I have a steep learning curve ahead. This is my first computer and I grew up before PCs where even invented. Just one more dumb question...if I go into real mode DOS, how do I get back out of it? Can I type something to go back into Windows or do I just hit the power button to turn the machine off?
Told you I didn't have a clue...LOL
Windows 98se, Compaq computer.
Dave
