Reply: (edit)I dont think we needed the "DOS Newbie" part, most of us here could've guessed. You dont need any files to open it, thats why its called "Self-Extracting".

Reply: (edit)Well that is not 100% true Worm! You need a computer that has been booted with at least a Basic MS-DOS Bootdisk. So you need the minimum of IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS & COMMAND.COM It makes sense to us! But not a newbie!

Reply: (edit)Come on, guys! Let's really help the boy! All you have to do is to run (execute) the file. Self-extracting files, are executable files that have the ability to extract it-self! ---- The files you told, greg, as you know, are needed to run ANY program under DOS, not only self-extract files! It's part of the system! hope to have helped! LZ

Reply: (edit)LZ greg is right! ken asked 'What DOS files do you need...' Not 'How do you open a Self-Extracting File?' You are both right of course! But ken got the answer to what he asked.
