When I try to reference drives D:(jaz), E:(zip) or F:(CD R/W), I get "invalid drive specification".
This occurs when I boot up DOS, or do a Shutdown / restart in MS-DOS. In a DOS prompt window in Windows 98 SE, the drives are available.
I suspect it's a configuration (CONFIG.SYS) and/or startup (AUTOEXEC.BAT) problem, but I really don't know anything useful about these files.
I need detailed, simple-minded help and instruction.

Theses devices require special drivers to load in the config.sys and autoexec.bat files.
Visit iomega.com for your jaz and zip drives and look around for dos drivers.
Same with the CD-rw
You probably don't want these drivers to load before you are going to be using Win98, but only when you are running in true DOS mode. In this case you can get into a multi-config setup.
After you install them, you can reconstruct your config.sys to look something like:
menuitem=DOS,DOS only
menuitem=WIN98,Windows only
[WIN98]
[DOS]
driver1.sys
driver2.sys
driver3.sysThen, reconstruct your autoexec.bat to look something like:
goto %config%
:WIN98
goto END
:DOS
load driver1.com
load mscdex...whatever
:END

I get the message "invalid drive specification" when I try to access my C drive. I cannot do anything in DOS. What is the problem?

I have mandrake 8.1 installed on my computer but when I wanted to reinstall win98. I get this message "invalid drive specification". when I reboot with the recovery disk in there I get a message saying I need to repartition the harddrive and to hit C to continue when I hit C then below the message I get "Invalid drive specification" and then asks me if I want to reboot system or restore system and when I choose restore system it takes me to the A:/ and I can get into the Q:/ prompt which my cdrom is mounted on. but then I dont know what to do to make win98 reboot so I can install windows.
