Comment:
I have recently installed a game (SWOS 96/7) on my PC, I have Windows ME. When installing (which is done in DOS)I configure my joystick/audio settings but when I try and save these settings I get an error message saying 'DOS ERROR ACCESS DENIED' even if I don't change anything and leave the controls/sound as default it still gives the same message if I try and save. My knowledge of DOS is very limited I'm afraid. Does anyone know why this is and can anyone help please because trying to play sensi on the default keyboard setting is a knightmare.

That error can mean almost anything I'm afraid - often seen when trying to save to write-protected media, but can occur in other situations (duplicate filenames, attempting to overwrite a read-only file). Check your documentation, try removing/renaming any game-related .INI or .CFG files maybe - could be buggy software too.

Sure - sorry I can't be more definitive, but that is a general kind of error, and it depends greatly on just what the application software is trying to do in DOS.

If this is a DOS based game, it might be a good idea to ensure that you're actually "in" the game folder and not running things from a desktop shortcut (for instance)

Is this a game that needs to run in pure dos? I'm wondering if the error is associated with ME's lack of dos support.

Also, some sound card dos drivers won't install unless 'PnP OS' in cmos is set to 'no'.

Yeah - ME DOS is an odd one. I seem to recall ME overwrites changes made to autoexec.bat & config.sys - maybe that's at the root of it. Might be worthwhile applying one of the patches that enable starting in DOS and try things that way
