DOS Editor not working (beginner q)

I am trying to load CD ROM drivers onto DOS 5.0, and I know to edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files. I have tried to use IBM DOS Editor mulitple times, but the system hangs when it opens the editor. I can view what is in the files easily, but I need to edit them to load the driver, is there a different way to do this other than the IBM DOS Editor

FOllow-up: in the command prompt, "C:\>edit config.sys" also just hangs the system (white line below the prompt just flashes).

You could use a W98 OEM boot floppy, you can download a self-extracting floppy image from:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
