i need a generic driver so my pcmcia cd rom can be detected for setup. linux has one for mandrake. is there one for dos???

Yes mr o you can have an External PCMCIA CD-ROM Driver in the same way as a PCMCIA Modem, Network Card or Memory!
You need 3 things to make 'PCMCIA Card Services' Work. A DOS Operating System, PC Card Services, and Device Driver.
(Windows 95/98 also has built-in Card Services, only you cannot use them till Windows is installed!)
If you use IBM PC-DOS from 6.3 onwards, it has Card Services as an added extra. otherwise search via http://www.windrivers.com/company.htm
for Laptop Manufacturers own PCMCIA Driver or use the Generic Card services located on Preston Lewis's Site at :
http://www.geocities.com/prestonlewis
Then identify, locate and download Device Driver via:
http://www.windrivers.com/company.htm

Still more expedient may be to use the boot disk that comes w/ Win98. Have yet to see a CD-Rom that this disk wouldn't initialize.
To be sure, this disk is optimized for loading you-know-what. But simply make boot disk with any recent version of DOS. Then copy all of the CD-Rom drivers from W98 boot disk. These are listed in the config.sys. May also wish to copy/paste the same lines into your own config.sys...and do same for MSCDEX line from same disk's autoexec.bat
Time to make your own universal boot disk that will recognize ANY CD-Rom.
