I was told to load my sound card in dos, but with no instructions...I did restart in dos mode and got an error saying that the sound card is not found. Can anyone instruct me on how to do this, so I don't screw it up? I reformatted my HD and Win98se just wouldn't pick up on my sound card with was priviously loaded from the 98 disk. Why it would not let me just choose my sound card (it was listed) I don't know. I chased down a driver for it and have sound for some things and not others with no midi. Can you help?

Here's an old trick I learned with the old bitch of a computer I used to have, till I left it in the highway filled with trash: Go into Device Manager, and delete EVERYTHING pertaining to the sound card. Then restart Windows. It should say "Windows has found new hardware........" if you're lucky, it worked on my ESS Audiodrive. As for DOS, you probably need to set the BLASTER environment variable. If your sound card is normal, SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T4 or SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 should work fine. Try them both, or maybe have settings autodetected in a setup program like games come with.

TY Chris, but is that all you have to do is to type it in autoexec.bat?

Most soundcards have a DOS installation utility that will load the right drivers and change your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys for you. It just requires a bit of patience searching on DRIVER Websites like

Hey Chris, I did what you said and while windows was finding the new hardware the message still came up: Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI driver cannot load Midi Waveset. Midi playback has been disabled. This came up and I had to hit ok before windows would continue loading the soundcard. This is driving me crazy! I do think I used to have a thing in the add/remove programs called embedded 3d audio player (or close to it) which I do not have any longer. Could it have something to do with that? How does midi waveset get disabled before the soundcard is even loaded? :-( More help, please....TY
