Hello Everyone,
I hope that there is an easy explanation but I can't figure it out. I have copied from my Hard drive to 3.5's using a startup disk and following the IO, MSDOS, Command order and to no avail the setup disk every time goes to start up and just hangs there without going any further. If anyone can Help I would really appreciate it....
Thanks again
Janna

Copying the files is not what you do. Try format a:/s

Hi,

To make ANY drive bootable you need at least 3 files Io.sys Msdos.sys and Command.com (of course I mean MS-DOS and Win9x systems). You never can boot with command.com only. As a matter of fact the first 2 files are hidden, so they can't be visible with plain DIR command (use DIR /AH to see them). But just the presence of these files on the disk not make it bootable. They must be placed in the correct place of disk an in correct order, and then the disk must have boot record in boot sector to start booting process. All that job is done by SYS C: or FORMAT C: /S commands. So you need to boot with floppy and then use one of these commands to make your disk bootable.

Good luck, Igor M

Igor????? I did all that and still yet for some reason the computer loads up and recognizes the boot disk then it says ok goes to the next step of loading the rest and just sits there not doing a thing. I had a friend open up an FTP account on his A: drive and I got a copy of his 6.2 disk and used it as well thinking that it might just be my copy but it still has not worked.... If you can think of anything else please feel free to email me I am at a total loss now.......

Igor, Unless I mis read the question, they need to have a boot floppy, and your format command will format the HD?
Also, Janna, check in your bios/cmos if you hve boot sequence seet to look at A: first.

Yes it boots to the A: drive and I have formatted the floppy with the /s function and also tried with the start up disk for win 95 erasing all files and putting the dos files on it starting with the IO.sys then MSDOS.sys then Command.com and then copying the rest on there. But then when I place the disk in in either case it starts to boot from the floppy saying "Searching for Boot Disk .... then it says OK, it then goes to the next line and just hangs there.... I can't get it to go any further than that it doesnt fault out it just sits there doing nothing and I have to reset my computer.... I am going through so much trouble just to get my Novell system back on line, If anyone can think of anything else I do apreciate all the help and would buy you all a beer but Hmmmm I dont think they serve that on here..... I am almost to the point now I think of just going out and buying Dos 6.2 all over again and what a Joy thats going to be..... Hehehehehehehe

OK, lets start at the beginning. Are you running win95 or DOS? If Win 95, then you can create a startup disk from WIN 95, using a clean disk. If you are in DOS, you make the boot disk by typing format a: /s
You can not just copy files to a blank disk, because they will not be recognized properly.
Find someone who has the OS you are using and make a boot disk from their machine, if you can not get yours to boot at all.
Also, you could have a bad disk or a bad drive, so try your disk on anothe machine, and format a new disk to see if either of these ideas work.

Hi Janna

First I want to apologize for my confusing C: and A: drive as Mike noticed above. Just read the question not carefully.
In your last answer you said you got the message "Searching for the Boot Disk". But usually the BIOS not show such message while booting. May be your computer has some special BIOS or your hard drive has some boot manager in Master Boor Record. At least I think you can try your boot disk in another computer first to be sure it's working. If disk will boot in another computer, then the problem is not the disk itself but may be some CMOS settings in your compuiter.

Good luck, Igor M

Hey, having problems? I would like to say , from what i have read in regard to response to your problem, i agree that most of thier advice is correct. I would like to add , try cleaning your "a" drive (you can purchase a disk anywhere, cheap). I also believe you could reset your cmos setting on your mother board(jumper)use this as a last resort.

Good luck
Wayne C.

then it just sits there
I have a ASUS K7M slot A and an Athlon 650.
