Will the dos defrag tool in dos 6.2 work on fat32 drives safely? Or some other ?

I ask because I have winME on a laptop and it is hard to disable everything in the background to scandisk and defrag.I was thinking if I made up a boot disc with the right tools might save some hassles.I realize there might be some issues so I thought I'd throw it out for feed back.
Thanks
Peter

The dos defrag tool will not even work correctly on a drive running windows 9.x. It will destroy your long file names. I would try booting to safe mode and then defraging.

There are none that can be run from DOS and preserve FAT 32 Long File Names. MS in their wisdom decided it would be best if Defrag was only run from Windows and there is no third party utility. Sucks bigtime, because there are some files that can't be defragged while windows is running. Stupid, stupid, stupid! If you are using NTFS you can use a utility like Diskeeper to defrag in console mode on a reboot. Why can't you do that for FAT 32 DOS? I don't know and it really pisses me off. Oh, oh! Looks like The Doofus is about to blow a gasket. LOL!

To use the windows defrag and scandisk correctly go to start then run and type "msconfig" a box will open up, click the general tab at the top and you'll see 3 options "Normal" "Diagnostics" and "Selective" select "Selective" and un tick everything below it then click okay and restart then once restarted do scandisk then defrag then repeat the above steps after it is completed but this time select normal startup and click okay and restart
