I have windows 98
This is the problem I used to have:
When I tried to turn on my computer, a screen came on that said-invalid system disk, but there weren't any disks or floppys in the drive. So I went online to search for a solution. I don't have my recovery cd anymore, so I went to this site where it told me I could download it(on a floppy, not cd), the site: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/r1018377689
(its in the first reply), i think the site to the download is http://www.mirros
it is saved as boot98se.exe from http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/winfiles/boot98se.exe
and followed the instructions( the sys c: think) , now I don't have that problem anymore, but a new problem came up.
My computer starts up the the blue cloud screen and then this screen comes on:

What am I suppose to write to start up windows?, when i try to type exit, another C:\> line just comes up

You're not on Windows yet, your on DOS. In order to get into it, simple type "WIN" and hit enter. If that doesn't work, change to the windows directory first:
CD \WINDOWS
(or whatever is your windows directory) and then type WIN.
However, in order to get to windows directly every time you boot, you'll have to change the file MSDOS.SYS, located on the root (C:\). Change the following line:
BootGUI=0
into this:
BootGUI=1
You'll have to reset the file's attributes before that, or you won't be able to save it. In order to do such thing on DOS, do:
ATTRIB -s -h -r \msdos.sys
Anyway, you can do it from Windows if you like. It's good to restore the file's attributes after you change it.

i only got through
CD \WINDOWSi could not change the file MSDOS.SYS
sorry but the steps were kind of confusing, what do i do after CD \WINDOWS? thankswhen i entered
ATTRIB -s -h -r \msdos.sys
another C:\> just came up

Hi. Type DIR /P /W look for MS-DOS.sys manually.
Or what you can do go to you Bios settings and Disable the boot-up floppy check. Suppose I should elabore. Press F12 or Delete key during start up. When it gets to the Blue Bios screen disable all boot routines except for the root (C:) And when you computer boots up, it wont bother checking for any disk or even recognize the 3.5 and should, in theory pass you on to windows (this is theory I might add)doh! I should read the entire thing before responding!
"What am I suppose to write to start up windows?, when i try to type exit, another C:\> line just comes up"Ya try navigating using the DIR command. See if you have any sort of file structure in place. You may need to totally re-install windows from the prompt or format the drive. I wish I knew more about the problem tho.

Have you looked at the bios settings for drive C:
You do this by entering setup, before the pc boots.
It could be that the cmos battery is failing, which can cause these settings to revert to default, and it might not be seeing the hdd.
It appears to me you are looking first at the difficult solutions, rather than the simple.
Good luck - keep us posted.

Excuse me guys, but I don't think beta is booting from the boot disk anymore. From what I understood, she booted once with it, transferred the boot files from the floppy to the local system (sys a: c:) and now she's booting without the boot disk.

Beta, to get into windows, do the following:
CD \WINDOWS
WINThat should do it. Now, to make the system go to windows directly on every normal boot, you'll have to do something else.
Before that, tell us if you were able to get into windows with that way I described above. If you aren't, discribe what happens.

when i type
CD \WINDOWS
it changed into
c:\windows>
then when i type win
it says
HIMEM.SYS is missing
Make sure that the file is in your Windows directory

Hmmm... More complex than I thought. However, this sort of question looks more like a WINDOWS question, more apropriate for the windows9x forum.
I reckon a good subject would be "missing HIMEM.SYS". I think it would also be good to make clear that you don't know much about DOS commands (do you?).

Hi...
I was reading your predicament with regards to the "missing HIMEM.SYS." I ran into the same problem with regards to that and I was not able to fix it at all.
The reason i got that message in DOS was because i installed a burned version of microsoft frontpage and when it rebooted it gave me that message.
I spent a bit of time trying to fix it and i could not. I was forced to backup everything on that drive (by turning it into a slave) and copy it all over and format.A fellow friend of mine had the same thing happen to him and he solved it by calling technical support to fix the problem. It took two tech people and an hour or two to figure out how to correct it.
I suggest, if you can, call some tech support either from the computer's manafacturer or some otherway. They may eventually solve it.
Sorry I couldn't say much other then that but if you DO solve that "missing HIMEM.SYS" problem please reply back on how you solved it because i spent alot of time trying to correct it.

Surely HIMEM.SYS is the memory manager/driver which is called within either CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT when you switch on the pc.
If you are by-passing either of the normal versions of these in order to start the pc, many facilities will not function correctly.
Good luck - keep us posted.

When my sister in law starts her computer it first flashes the windows screen then goes to the black screen with c: prompt -- she said it also tells her to something about command.com -- extract.exe and readme.txt -- what can we do to get her computer to come up in windows and stay.
