First off, I am not sure where this problem should go. But I need someone with DOS experience, so that's my reason for posting here.
Never saw or heard of this before. I work in DOS or DOS based programs everyday. I decided I need to make copies of my favorites on my D:\ drive. I used File Commander (dual-pane file manager) to copy each folder from C:\ to D:\. Suddenly, on a particular URL, it tells me there is an error. That there is no file with this filename: Perfect Sync's DOSBox Wrapper App. Yet it shows in the directory of File Commander. It shows perfect, filename, date, bytes, long filename, etc; I can use a DOS program and view the text contents just fine. I can view the contents with Notepad too. So I tried a DOS window. Same deal, DIR shows up perfect. I type the copy command and get the same error. Exact Error:
File not found - Perfect Sync's_DOSBox Wrapper App.urlFunny part, I revert to DOS when Windows doesn't please me. This time just the opposite. Windows copies the URL just fine. BTW, the URL works in Favorites with no problems. As it turns out I found a total of 3 URLs that have this problem. I even went and made a new URL today for that site. Still can't be copied in a DOS window. Didn't try real DOS because of 8.3 filename restriction.
Might mention, many, many URL filenames are
A) long filenames
B) have spaces between words
And they are no problem. Just these 3 particular ones. Here is the content of that URL:

I'm guessing here, what are the (DOS) attributes set as on these files?
It's a good day when you learn something

Hi Dan
Only archive is set.
After posting I did try real DOS. Works fine there. Can copy/move/delete. (The filename gets truncated -which doesn't really concern me. I could use LFN, etc;). So it appears the problem is related to a DOS window only.
Hard to believe after all these years of Windows/DOS and I just now discovered this.

If I'm understanding correctly what you want, then the solution is very simple:
Just convert all your Favorites into a standard Netscape bookmark.htm file. Almost any other web browser that conforms to this standard (Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, etc.) can easily import them. It takes up far less space on the disk as a single HTML file, plus there is far less overhead on the FAT than with IE's convoluted Favorites structure, not to mention that there are no issues with truncated names.
Besides, if DOS is what you want to use, then the DOS web browsers like Lynx and Arachne will also work easily with your converted bookmarks since they follow that convention as well.

Well, yeah, you are right. I can handle the files just fine, by a variety of ways. But really the only problem is what caused the DOS problem? Why would I get a file not found error?
100s of favorites and these 3 do not look any different than the others (to me).
Any chance someone went to the site and made the URL a favorite, then checked to see if their copy is also a problem in a DOS window?

I had a bash at this and the results were most weird.
This command came up with File Not Found:copy "c:\windows\favorites\perfect sync's dosbox.url" "c:\my documents"
(three spaces after sync's).So I tried renaming the file knocking off letters from the right one at a time. No dice with the same style command until I got back to just perfect sync's.
Now here's the weird thing. If I then changed back to the original full name (including three spaces) it copied fine with the exact same command as originally.
As it happened I'd saved another copy of the original elsewhere. If I used that in Favorites we went straight back to File Not Found problem.
I thought I was barmy but was able to repeat the whole thing as many times as I wished.
It seems as if it does get confused about the two "extra" spaces and there is some sort of bug.

Thanks Derek
In my trial, I didn't remove as much as you did. I didn't backup all the way to Sync's. I was also trying to find something different inside the file. Looks like I didn't have to go inside at all.
Going to play with this when I get back later tonite and follow your advice.

Good score there Derek!
I checked one of the others as well and yes, removing some letters/words from the Filename does make the DOS window recognize it properly.
Strange. But I thank you for that discovery.
