I have a couple of questions regarding DOS w/Windows 95 - Is it necessary (or possible) to create a DOS boot disk under Windows 95, or would the Win 95 "Startup Disk" suffice in case of disaster? Also, is DOS still a separate system under Windows 95, or just a componet of Win 95? (I ask this because I see info on the Net regarding DOS 6.x, but nothing about 7.x or higher)

DOS is still the backbone for Win95 - a DOS7x boot disk will start your system with the command prompt - but not much else.
You can create one from the DOS prompt using

sys a:

A 'startup' disk will have additional utilities (scandisk, regedit, sys... etc).

Your Windows 95 boot disk has to be improved by adding the CD-ROM and sound support.
In autoexec.bat add:
set blaster=a220 i5 d1
lh c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe /d:oemcd1
in config.sys add:
dos=high,umb
devicehigh=c:\cdrom\cdrom.sys /d:oemcd1
You may copy your driver for cd-rom and the files like mscdex on the floppy to make an emergency boot disk in case Windows has to be reinstalled.Change the path to A drive and use the name you like for d: .Good luck.

Simple answer!

Original Windows 95/95A bootdisk did not have CD-ROM support. The 95B sometimes did if the dealer added it!

Starting with Windows 98 Microsoft added CD-ROM support.

Visit http://support.micronpc.com/downloads/boot.html
and download there Windows 95 bootdisk with CD-ROM support - Test it with your system - If it works, you have your emergancy bootdisk.

Let us know if it works.
