Is there a way, through dos, to find the password file? My son did something to our computer at home and we're locked out with an invalid password. Someone told me to get it from the DOS files, but I don't know how to access them or where to look.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Try the NT forum - different Operating System entirely. In 'real' DOS based Windows, passwords are stored as *.PWL files - but I don't know if that's necessarily true for NT

Hi,

I got this, but I forget where:

bd040116.zip

It works on 2k so will probably do NT.

Do a search.

You cannot access a NTFS harddrive with a normal DOS bootdisk, you need a utility such as NTFSREAD (Copy on my Bootdisk Project Page)

Take a look at:

http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

for help & bd040116.zip if you want it.

That is unless he has applied a BIOS Password which locks your PC BEFORE the OS Boots!

In that case you may have problems.

To what stage do you get to when you are asked for the password?

Please reply with a message to let us all know we are on the right track...

I put the boot disc in and restarted the computer in safe mode. I got an a:> prompt. Is that right? How to I get to the c drive? Where do I find the SAM or the password files?
