G'day,
I successfully downloaded the two DOS 7.1 image disks, and after some struggle with restoring them (a number of faulty floppies!!), I finally have two bootable install disks.
I wish to upgrade the DOS 6.2 on this PS/2 55, but after looking at the setup and config files I get the impression that they assume that you want CD-ROM support.
I don't have a CD-ROM (may put one on at a later date), so I was wondering if I have to alter anything (like the device= in the config.sys) to avoid hanging the system (which it did when I booted directly from disk1 - it couldn't find a CD-ROM and just hung..).
Do I boot as normal in 6.2 and then insert disk and run setup.bat?
If anyone has been through this process I would certainly be grateful for any pointers.
regards,
Elric

Firstly IBM PS2/55 are I believe 386SX16 not 486, and did not use CD drives as did not have internal IDE connections, but I could be wrong....

DRDOS 7.xx or FreeDOS would be better alternatives as the scope of these PC's is limited ie 512K graphics, MCA expansion card slots as well as the size of the hard drive, usually 40 or 60MB so space it at a premium...http://www.freedos.org/

As to original question, just REM out the lines relating to the CD in both CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

The IBM PS/2 Model 55 did not support IDE CD-Rom drives (no hardware interface). But the SCSI Adapter/A is an option, and allows connection of external SCSI attached CD-Rom drives.

G'day,
Thanks for the prompt replies, guys. Yes, rogerashley, I have been having problems identifying it.
Maybe you can help. It says PS/2 55SX 486 on the badge on the front. It boots up and tells me that the processor is a 486SLC2, the hardrive is 540MB and the RAM is 16MB extended.
DOS 6.2's MSD says it is a PS2 70/80. The problem is that it used to be a Police Office machine, so they have wiped everything. I can't get into the BIOS (tried CTRL/ALT/INS as suggested)and have downloaded reference disks for PS2 models 70486,70/80,50/55/56 , all of which boot up but then stop and tell me that they won't run on that hardware (the machine is locked).
I have fixed the harddrive and got DOS6.2 working. For the purposes that I want to use it for, I could leave it as is, but I thought I would put the latest version of DOS on that I could find (just to make things easier).
As for the CD-ROM support, you could both well be correct, since I have not investigated that yet; certainly, there is no bay for one. I don't really need one, though, hence my original question.
As for the SCSI port- where would I find that?
There is an add-in card that has a 9-pin DIN (al a COM) which I had assumed might be a network card (since it was part of a network in the local Police Office).
Well, thanks for reading my ramblings- I'll go off and look at some of those links now.

Elric

This is a totally upgraded special and therefore you would need to know whom was responsible for upgrading:

Elric,
About a month ago, I also downloaded MS-DOS 7.10 and installed it and I was intimidated by the device drivers and programs that went into config.sys and autoexec.bat. I have been using MS-DOS 6.22 for years and, for my needs, has been quite sufficient. The LFN (long file name support) and a few other extras in 7.10 is very good, but I can get by without them. I found that the copy command would work with LFN, but xcopy would not. Also, LFN is not supported in MS-DOS networking and this would have been a great thing had it been so. Xcopy help (xcopy /? ) states that it will not copy hidden files, but there is a switch to say that it will and this peeved me a bit. I also downloaded the Mini Windows 98 GUI and had a lot of problems trying to install it. When I did get it going, a number of errors of files missing would always display while the GUI was loading. However, once it was up and running, it was a great File Manager (Windows Explorer). I have tried to contact the China Dos Union about these problems and have requested for help, but they do not answer my e-mails and their forum has never worked.

Jester

I would use DOS 7.1 I have used it and you do not need a cd-rom drive it just assumes that for compadibility I was uning it on a compaq prolinea net1/33s (486sx 33, 21mb. RAM). twords the end of the setup program it will ask you if you want to load just the *.sys driver, or mccdex too.
One way you *might* be able to enter the BIOS is to see if it has a juper or DIP-switch that disables the setup program and remove it.

G'day,
Thanks for all the replies, guys; I think I will give it a go and see how well it performs.
Thanks, rogerashley, for the effort in determining the model number. I still hit blanks, but I can still use it for what I need.
regards,
Elric
