have read in a couple different places it is possible to "separate" out dos 7 from windows 9x. is it possible to extract dos 7 off the windows 9x cd or the hard drive to create a set of dos 7 install disks like dos 6.22 etc were.? how is this done?

Yes it's possible but it would take some tinkering around. The best way is to just load windows and then set it up to boot to either real mode dos or windows via a bootmenu you create in your config.sys and autoexec.bat. This is what I and others in here have done.

There is also on the cd rom or you can down load from microsoft oldos.exe I think it is called which adds some missing applications like help and maybe qbasic? Also some older dos apps like from dos 6x and 5 will still work like intersrv and interlnk and msd...Also the old windows 3.1 calendar.exe will work in 9x. There are still dos programs being written and can be downloaded. Search "dos" in Google, etc. Dos is quite powerful.

You could also try the DOS 7.0 Beta. It works fine for me, and seems to run as well/better than 6.22. You can get it here: http://pages.sprint.ca/wrs2233/files/os.htm This does no good if you wanted FAT32 supoprt, though.
