Comment:
I was trying to copy a lot of files onto the C drive under dos 6.22. And after about 500 files it stops as if there is not more space on the drive. It does not allow me to create any directories after puting all those files onto C. But if I create a directory from the start and copy all those files into the new directory it allows it. I need to have those files under C. Why is this happening? Thank you.
As far as I know the maximum number of files that can be allocated in the root directory ( C:\) is 512, reason that suggests not to overload it. Other directories are not limited by this constraint, so there is no workaround if that is the trouble you faced.
There is a DOS limit in the number of files in the root directory. As you have found out there in not the same limit in subdirectories. Why do you need to have so many files in the root? There may be workarounds.
Normally it's recommended to have as few files as possible in the root directory. Do you have a reason for wanting more than 500 files there instead of in subdirectories?
