Hello,

I have the original disks for Dos 6.22 and I want to copy the files to a folder on my computer and save them for later to copy back to a floppy disk for if i ever need them in the future, or if my disks go bad. Im not sure what im doing wrong but when i copy the files from the computer back to the floppy, and then try to boot into the setup menu, it just tells me non system disk error or something to that effect. How do i copy the missing files from the floppy disk to the computer so that i can get the computer to boot into ms dos setup screen?

Thanks

Doug

When creating a bootable disk you should copy the system files with the SYS command. That puts them in a specific part of the disk that makes it bootable. Then you can copy the rest of the files to the disk. You only need to do that with the first disk.

Also each disk needs a specific software label in order to work. Use the LABEL command. You'd type LABEL A: and when it asks what label to use type in DISK then hit the space bar 6 times and type 1 (or 2 or 3 depending on which disk it is) and then ENTER.

For what you are trying to do, rather than using 'copy' type commands, I would use a disc image utility such as VGA Copy.

This copies the entire floppy disc image to a single file.

When required, the file is used to create a mirror image of the source floppy.

However it might be better, rather than storing copies of the disks on your computer (or wherever), to just copy the discs themselves using the DISKCOPY command. e.g. I keep a couple of copies of the dos 6.22 set 'just in case'.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Agreed. And it wouldn't hurt to make 2 copies for that matter. Floppy disks "go bad" over time, losing their magnetic capacity. You may also want to try a utility like WinImage to save images of the disks to some type of optical media for an extra layer of precaution...

Did this one need a few months to marinate?

Hmm, odd. It was near the top of the list in DOS yesterday (maybe because of a removed post). Didn't notice the OP's original date. I don't normally respond to anything over a month old. Or maybe I was just a little too talkative yesterday...
