Comment:

I need to install DOS 6.22 on a new hard disk on a very old computer ('94). I have the original DOS 6.22 files via 3 seperate ZIP files but I cannot make the first disk bootable so the DOS setup program will start. How do you make the first disk bootable? I have formatted the floppies using the format /s command from windows 95&98 startup disks, and the win 98 command prompt, but the the DOS setup program on the floppies will not run. It gives me a message "incorrect DOS version". How do I correct this?

The object is a 6.22 boot disk with no other files or directories on it. So delete all the files and remove the directories. This should leave you with Command.Com and two hidden files. You can boot to 6.22 now so put the files for install disk 1 on this boot disk. Now enter LABEL and label the disk DISK 1. You must fill the label field of eleven spaces. So it is disk......1
without the dots.
This is still going to flag you as a software pirate. But there is no problem UNLESS you try to install Windows 95 or up later. Then the problem will be Windows acting up.
I think you have to buy disks manufactured by Microsoft not to get flagged, but DISKCOPY might not cause any problems. The problem is that disk 1 boots but in is not a conventional boot disk.

What are you talking about fred6008?
The disk label is DISK      1
Thats DISK followed by 6 spaces followed by 1 (A total of 11 spaces in all)
Download the MS-DOS 6.22 bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com then copy all other files from your disk 1 onto it - NO PROBLEMS as a 'pirate disk'

... it seems to be an odd world that fred6008 lives in... filled with pirates and alien hackers etc.

Just how does Windows 'act up' if you have "pirate disks" as opposed to those very special "Micro$oft disks"?

Derrick you're getting the 'bad command or filename' message because you formatted the floppies with the /s (system) switch under Win9x - this transfers the Win9x system files to the floppy, rendering it practically useless for 6.22 (you don't mix OS versions)
Try again, with different floppies, or else format them again WITHOUT the /s switch - then create the setup disks. Usually the first disk has to be created - it's not a matter of copying files only, the boot sector has to be setup properly (to boot) - you should have some sort of instructions included with the Zips.
